RCA Victor Victrola Model PVCR-84

by ekmouse2 » Fri Oct 13, 2006 3:03 pm

I've inherited an RCA Victor Victrola Model PVCR-84 console stereo/phonograph from my father. It's very special to me since I grew up listening to it with him.

I've been searching online and can't find any information on this model at all. Any information would be appreciated. Although, I would really like to know when it was manufactured. Also, since the turntable isn't working properly (it turns, but turns very slowly), I would like some information on how to repair the turntable or where I might be able to find a replacement.

Thank you.

The trouble with the turntable is probably rotted-away rubber on the idler wheel. I used to have a link to a company which puts new rubber on old wheels, but when I changed web browser software last month, I found I couldn't read the old bookmark file anymore.

Also check lubrication of the motor bearings, idler center bearing, jockey arm assembly pivots, and turntable center bearing.

RCA turntables also have a propensity to burn out the motor bearings if they are not kept lubricated properly.

Thanks for the quick reponse, Record-changer!

I'm a real newbie at this! (Computers are my expertise.) Most of the parts you listed sound greek to me, but I"ve already had the phonograph apart to clean and lubricate and I think I can locate/identify the parts you spoke of. The local Radio Shack guy suggested isopropyl alcohol to clean and sewing machine oil to lubricate. I wasn't real comfortable using the alcohol on the parts, when a Qtip an oil seems to take most of grime/gummieness off of the metal parts. After I lubricated most of the parts the turntable moves at the correct speeds. The final issue now is that it seems like the plate is off balance or warped.

Thanks again!

Isopropanol (Isopropyl alcohol) works on rubber wheels, but even better is Caig CaiKleen RBR rubber cleaner. It actually restores the rubber surface.

You can get it at radio-TV repair supply houses.

One caution: Don't get rubber cleaner in the bearings.

Ekmouse2,

I have a PVCR-182. I noticed your model was listed on the same schematic diagram as mine.

The three-channel stereo sounds real good. Make sure you hook up your CD/MP3 player to the TAPE input. Do you have reverberation on yours? I do, but it is currently not working. I found a company that makes the reverb tanks brand-new.

Do you have a pic of yours? Where in VA are you? I'm in Alexandria ...

Thanks for the info StanB. I'm in Chesapeake.

I'll look online for the schematics. Yes, it has reverberation. But, how do you tell if it is working?

How do you hook up an MP3 player to the tape input?

I also just acquired an RCA PVCR-84. The tape input in the back is open as there is no tape player. I spliced an 1/8th inch stereo cable and touched the left and right wires to the outside pins on the open tape input. It worked! i was able to play my iphone on the console. This isn't a permanent solution as the wires are too skinny to hold in the tape input. I found some RC airplane connectors that I believe will fit in the holes. I plan on soldering those to the wires from my stereo cable. That should do it. I will let you know how it comes out.
