Hi Emily,
As Matt said. Adding a 3 wire cord probably won't stop what you are hearing---however it does need to be done on that model, as it was done originally, by the factory. I don't know the "law" there, in PA, but here in CA, it is illegal to operate any item that originally had a three wire cord without one --Also, it is not legal to add it to an item not originally equipped with one (with out submitting it to UL for re-listing) !
If you still hear it after adding the new cord--check the grounding terminals in the phono, as some model RockOlas are prone to "oxidized connections" there-- Ron Rich

Are you hearing the mechanism sound through the speakers possible mute relay problem which may lead to a hum sound on standby, also if any of the tone arm wires are touching the negative wires, or a dirty connection from tone arm wires to the amp, but most likely a ground/earth issue with lighting circuit
