my 1970 magnavox micromatic stereo cabinet is down!

by j123veader » Fri Feb 28, 2014 5:21 am

Can someone please help, I am new to the forum and in need of help. One of the great joys of my life is my record player and something has gone wrong with the works. Three weeks ago my record player would not start spinning. Until now I never had an issue with it other than a needle. I assumed that the motor in the table had finally burnt out, so I went trolling on ebay and found a mint condition direct replacement in working order. I made the connections and went to fire it up and nothing happened. Upon further inspection I noticed that there was something amiss withe the control buttons on the stereo. The radio works fine but when you push the phono button to switch functions it seems to kill the power to everything. I know its a different application all together but it seems just like a house breaker that keeps tripping. Also after everything shuts off, the power switch does not turn on right away, I have to push it like 10 times before I can get the stereo back on. I think there is a problem in the receiver with the switches or something. Someone please help.

You will need to know how to work on electronics to fix that . Most of these stereos had the power switches set up so the whole stereo would shut off when the phono shut off after the last record . Seeing you need to push your power button several times tells me that switch has gone bad .

The internet is a convenient place to shop for a local and reputable sevicer.
The Internet is a marvelous thing, however it's not a good substitute for actually being there.

My humble advise, would be to un-plug that unit, and find a knowledgeable repair person. Contrary to what has been posted here, on this forum, I HAVE seen, more then a few house fires, started by faulty electrical items !
