Looking for a Turntable for this GE Deluxe 600 Portable

by Phonomike » Thu Sep 16, 2010 1:47 am

Anyway, here is a real nice Portable Stereo made by General Electric. I don't know what year this was made in but I think its wonderful.
This thing has fabulous sound. I got it at an antique store for $30.00. What I like about this is that it has a full tuner and radio in it,
and I can even plug my cd player into it. While I had in the store, I was trying a record on the turntable, seemed to work just fine, but
when I left the store I closed the record compartment with the record still stacked on the spindle. When I got it home and tried it, the
record compartment wouldn't open, I thought whats wrong with this? Well it turns out that the record compartment wouldn't open because
I still had the record stacked on the spindle, when I did finally force the record compartment open, I had broke the tone arm in half, I tried
to tape it back together but that didn't exactly work. Does anyone have a spare GE turntalbe that they are not using anymore that you
could possibly sell to me cheap? I am including some pictures so you can tell what kind of turntable is in it, Hope someone can help me.
This is a General Electric Deluxe Trimeline 600.

Hey Phonomike,

Your GE looks so much like my Zenith portable. When I encounter an opening problem like that, I remove the speakers and lean the thing completely on its face...things seem to fall back in place. Then try to open it as you tilt it back to its original position. If it's still stuck, maybe tilt it up toward your left and maybe the arm will swing back (if it's not clamped) toward the spindle. I've had some cases where the screws holding the base had come loose, and the turntable tilted backward. I'm talking about the board that the turntable is attached to, not the screws to float the turntable.

Damn, what a shame the arm snapped in half. I don't know, but it could possibly be some type of VM changer that you have there. I have a GE console out in the garage with the same changer. I'm sure the more acknowledgeable folks can chime in here.

Take a look-see. --BB

That was the top of the line GE portable, a real shame about the tonearm.
Those changers were Ge built, they come up once in a while on Ebay where someone is parting out a console.
There is an internet seller, jukn55, that has nos GE parts and at one time had those tonearms, not sure if he has any left.

I know this may sound tacky, but using resources available, I would use some type of strong epoxy to glue it back together (if it's made of plastic or can be bonded), then I would put a small hose clamp around that glued joint just as reinforcement. Have the screw aligned horizontally so it doesn't scratch the underside of any stacked records.

Hey, it may not look pretty, but it's better than wrapping the thing with scotch tape which will eventually weaken/dryout, and with the clamp, you may have to adjust the stylus pressure from its added weight. That should hold pretty good until you find a parts turntable. Desperate times call for desperate measures. --BB
