Grundig Mozart Record Player No Sound

I recently bought a 1963 Grundig Mozart console record player. The radio works and the record player was working yesterday. I bought some thrifty records just to hear the record player work, and it did, but when I changed to a new record, no sound came through the speakers. The radio still works fine, but still no sound from the record player. The mechanism works just fine and I know the amp is working but no sound from the record player. Does anybody have any suggestions? Thank you so much!

Probably tube from that year. As for the no sound problem it could be the muting switch located under the turntable where the tonearm wires terminate. Don't confuse it with the on-off switch connected to the motor. See if the muting switch is stuck assuming it has one. Also with the volume turned up only a little you can touch one of the wires leading to the tonearm and if you get a hum chances are the amp is fine where the turntable is concerned. Simple things that get overlooked such as broken or disconnected cables could also cause your problem.

Great! The record player inside the Grundig is a Dual 1016, I don't know if you know the model and if/where the mute would be. I would hope it's something that simple - it was very odd how it stopped working.

I will see about checking all of the scenarios you explained and post back.

Now that I know it's Dual here is something else you should look at and it's easy to get to. On the tonearm grasp the finger lift lever on the headshell and pull towards you (I can't remember if it is pull towards you or push back towards the rear of TT) to release the headshell insert (cartridge mount). There are contacts on the back that, unless I miss my guess, are corroded. Clean with de-oxit or similar cleaner both the contacts on the headshell insert and the contacts in the headshell proper. Be careful. Do not deform the contacts. Reinstall and try it out. This is a known weak spot on Duals.

I've tried cleaning with Doxite but nothing came off of the connectors - and still no sound. I just keep thinking, what could just switch off between changing records for it to no longer play.

I'm buying a new needle tomorrow, though I really think it is a missing connection like you said. How can you tell if there is a missing connection in the arm of the record player?

If the small connectors up inside the tonearm head are clean and not damaged, they should mate with the headshell's connectors and make a good connection.

If the muting switch is working properly you can check by putting a finger up inside the tonearm without the headshell, and gently touching the connectors to make it "hum" though the speakers.

After this... if no hum, something's wrong elsewhere. (muting switch, electronics, wiring)
If you get a hum, the cartridge/headshell is the problem.

Dirty slector switches in the amp will also need cleaning... those german sets are notorious for tarnished contacts.

Follow the tonearm wiring beneath the chassis and it'll lead to the metal shield and lever assembly of the muting switch.

The actuating lever should ride against the main cam gear.... when in normal play (out of cycle) the lever should make the contacts open.

Before messing with it, remove the RCA plugs from the changer and touch the tips to hear a hum... if no hum, you've got a problem in the amp, not changer.
