Rockola 488

by dld1228 » Thu Feb 07, 2013 8:23 pm

i bought a non working rockola 488 and am trying to get it to work. the first thing i did was check all the fuses in the power supply, then plugged it in and turned on the switch only to find that one of the fuses blew right away. i found an exact replacement fuse as radio shack and replaced it after unplugging all the leads going into the power supply and the fuse blew again right away when the switch was turned on. i am looking for either some technical advise or a working power supply. can anybody help me?

dld,
If you have the needed skills, you will have to purchase a Service Manual / Schematic package, from one of the "legit" suppliers listed above in "announcements--where to find--" (above), and trouble shoot the power supply, and then the items powered. If not, you might purchase another supply, and find it does the same thing---If you had listed your location in your profile, I might know of a pro near you-- Ron Rich

Karen,
You need to be more specific--is the gripper failing to lift the record off the turntable, or is the gripper not moving at all ?
--and how are you doing it "manually" ? Ron Rich

The gripper arm is not moving at all. Not closing on the record . I can turn the little switch on the bottom of the gripper motor and it will take the needle off and pick up record and put it into the magazine. But not by itself. We just checked the mechanism power board with a meter and got no power to it. Checked the meter on other stuff and it works so am wondering if it is that board. When record is playing ,no sound but can unplug one of the plugs going into that board and I get sound. So could there be a short in the board. know where I can get a board for $45.00. So what do you think. Thanks Karen

Dld
if its any help i had similar trouble with a rockola 488 and 477, whereby it wouldn't power up,in my case there was filtering capacitor on the mains cable inside the power supply and the cap had split, also there was a filtering cap on the lighting circuit and this was defective and would blow the fuse, they can be bypassed but they are there for a reason so if they were faulty it would be best to replace them, mind you i have only seen the filtering caps on the european power supplies and not on the US ones

Ron,

I live in Western Kentucky (Paducah area). I have ordered and am awaiting a power supply that the person I am buying from stated that it did power up and the lights came on. I will try and just replace the whole power supply and hope that works. If not I will post the results and we will go from there. thank you for you response.

ok, so I got the power supply, installed it and turned the unit on. The power came on, lights, etc.. I turned the scan switch on and the turn table started turning. I got excited thinking maybe this was all I needed to get this unit working. I put in a quarter and the mechanism worked great and gave me a credit. I entered a song number. Nothing happened. So now I need to figure out what is the next step in troubleshooting this unit (488 Rockola). I did do some looking around with the power on and there is a small board in the upper parts of the box that had a blinking red light. The logic board also lit up with an always on red light. And other than the display that shows the most recent 3 selections, there were not any other lights that I noticed lit up. Any suggestions on where to check next?
