hi, working on a 2100 for someone. got it all working but havind sound issues. it had a cobra magnetic cartridge in it but i got very -very low sound. tried it with another amp that can handle a magnetic cartridge and got same result. bought a new cobra cartridge from needles4jukeboxes and got same result. got another new needle and same thing. i get nothing when i touch the tip of needle, but get sound if i barely touch the small coil of wire that the needle connects to in the cartridge. this is the first time i have worked with a magnetic cartridge. i also replaced the wiring from the tonearm to the amps. any ideas?? i would be willing to mail the two needles i have to someone to try in their juke. also- what is the soft white stuff up against the needle?? thanks-cliff

Let me begin by saying that I know nothing, or almost nothing about this topic. However, if you look at the thread I started a couple of days ago titled 'sound inconsistencies stylus pressure issues' (or something like that) it hits some of what you are asking. I have a 2150 and upgraded it to a ceramic cartridge.

That having been said, I would first check the mute/play switch. It contains a shielded wire that runs to a plug on the amp. If that isn't set properly, you won't get any sound through. Cleaning those switches and making sure it engages at the proper time (as well as the wire) would be the first place I would start. I'll have to check, but I think that one has the spring that holds the switches open.

Hi Cliff,
A "Cobra" and a"Magnetic" cartridge are two different annimules ! They can not be interchanged without modifying the amp, at least.
Are you sure that you have the Cobra plugged into the correct plug ? If so, you either have wiring problems, as the "Old Goat", said above, or amplifier problems--
The "white stuff" is grease--It is required on Cobras---

Ron, we have a seeburg "c" at work. could i take off the tone arm assembly (including wireing) from the wurlitzer and plug it into the seeburg amp? the "c" uses a magnetic cartridge doesn't it ??

Cliff,
A "Cobra" is NOT a magnetic cartridge--no, can not be done !

Ron's correct. The COBRA cartridge is not a magnetic type nor is it ceramic. It's totally different than any other vinyl pickup device.

Has the amplifier in question been rebuilt and recapped?
