Astro-Sonic problems

by teetera » Fri Jul 22, 2011 3:45 am

For a few years I've owned a Magnavox Astro-Sonic that I just got a new needle for. It's a Montauban Astro-Sonic, serial 254475. Before I had the needle I used the FM radio often, and the sound was really great. However, the sound on the now working turntable was very patchy. Every minute or so the sound drops down for a few seconds, or maybe longer. I really don't know anything about record players so I'm at a loss about what I can do. Please give me any suggestions to get this console's speakers working well. My only thought was that there is a red yellow and blue cord piece that messing with brings about a similar inconsistency, but I don't even know the type of cord it is.

First off,

If you have a Montauban, it is a "Montauban Astro-Sonic 100", model 4-ST686. The number you posted may be some type of serial number. This unit kicks butt with 100 Watts of useable music power.

From my limited knowledge, this is what may be in your unit:

What you're vaguely describing is not a speaker issue, if the radio plays well. Your description of red, yellow and blue cords messing with things (where are they?) give no clue to what they are attached to.

Sound issues from a turntable could mean alot of things...broken wiring, bad cartridge, etc. Trace the wires from the TT to the base plate, and the other wires that connect them to the receiver/preamp.

Not to be harsh, but you are totally clueless as to how to get your "speakers" operating correctly, since they seem to work well in the radio mode. It's not a speaker issue.

And, FYI... Every piece in that unit is a separate entity and has its own repair manual. Turntable/Amp/Receiver plus optional Reel/Cassette deck. Take it to a knowledgeable/professional person and get it checked out, before you destrioy it.

Sorry folks, I should have posted this privately so you wouldn't have to see my gazillion pics again. Just trying to help out a newbie. --BB

I don't mind the pics Bobby but they do cause me to drool a little on the keyboard. :)
Vinyl is disease which attacks that area of the brain desiring digital recordings. Once you catch it, you are cured.
