dame clara butt recordings (78 rpms)

by sobie » Mon Feb 19, 2007 11:09 pm

Hi lads,
Anyone of you have any dame clara butt (opera) recordings lying about, recorded from 78 rpms first hand ? I'm not too fond of all these remastered CD's and didn't find any of her recordings on 78's so far.
I'm dying to hear a bit more.
Any tips on URL's (sounds libraries) or something ?
Thx for helping out :)
Sobie

Heres a pic of the earliest recording I have of "Madame" Clara, Butt  I have 6 or so other records on the columbia label. I'll pull them out over the next few days, and post a list of what I've got. If theres any there you'd like to hear, I can record them, and forward them to you as an email attachment. I haven't noticed any sites with Clara recordings, but to be honest, i havent really looked for her either.

Ha, sounds great.
There's this website on vintage opera which has a couple of tracks by her, but on very low sound quality. The tracks/recordings themselves are awesome though, no doubt about that :)
http://www.cantabile-subito.de/Contralt ... clara.html

And I wonder if one could enter/upload 78 rpm recordings on the http://www.archive.org site, they have an audio library and a 78rpm folder, but not that much interesting recordings there though :(

If one could, I'll defenitely upload some of my own records up there in the future ;)
Cheers

Sorry I've taken so long-nice couple of days hey!
I've found a couple so far, but they're not exactly opera recordings though. I'll list what I've dug out so far, and list the rest when I find them.(soon I hope)

1) Single sided 12" Columbia:7140 "The Holy City" by Madame Clara Butt

2)Double sided 12" Columbia :7315 "The Old Folks At Home" & "In The Chimney Corner"

3) Double sided 10" Columbia:X302 "Kathleen Mavourneen" & "The Rosary"

Sooner than I thought :D I pulled my finger out, and found 3 more.

1) Single sided 10" columbia:X226 "The Sweetest Flower That Blows" by Madame Clara Butt.

2) Double sided 10" Columbia:09001 "Trees" & "The Knight Of Bethlehem"

3) Double sided 10" columbia:X300 "My Treasure" & "The Fairy Pipers"

And of course the one pictured above- "Abide With Me"

I think thats all I've got. If any more turn up, I'll let you know Sobie.
And if there's any there you'd like an MP3 of, let me know and I'll get them to you! Unfortunately, no opera titles to my knowledge- or at least heavy opera.

BTW: Thanks for posting the above link. I found it quite interesting. :o I wonder what her last recording was, that she made from her wheelchair??
You've given me a new appreciation for Clara's music!!
Thank you :!:

Hi, well thx, don't know if I'm going to like her 'non-operatic' recordings though, what'd you reckon ? :p

Here's a link of an extended discography on Clara Butt
http://uk.geocities.com/trevormidgley/R ... dings.html

It even has a 'non-issued' list :o

And I even found a video clip from 1915 of Clara returning by ship from... on youtube ! :p

Enjoy !

Hello

I was searching to see if there was a market for a 78 rpm of Dame Clara Butt singing the Rosary. I inherited it many years ago from an Aunt and have no means of playing it, along with some similar Inkspots recordings. Would you let me know how much if at all you are interested in collecting this record.

Regards

David

Hello,
I would like to add some recordings of Dame Clara Butt to my acoustic collection.
If anyone would care to sell some of the recordings they no longer want, I would like to hear from you.
I would like to have the recording of "The Holy City" and "The Rosary" for my collection.

Any response will be appreciated regarding any of Dame Clara's recordings that may be available.

Please advise the title, disc condition and the price you are seeking.

MANY THANKS! :D
