Problems upgrading my magnavox console

by elliott » Thu Apr 10, 2008 5:34 am

I recently purchased a vintage Magnavox stereo 1P4125 [280 amps/117v/60hz], with AM/FM radio, 3 speed reel-to-reel tape recorder and a 4 speed record player. All the equipment works well.

Now I want to hook up a 5 disc CD player and I removed the back fiberboard panel and found the Auxilary panel which looks like this: two plug-in inputs on top labeled, "Line Output" with purple wire "right" and yellow wire "left" and the two plugin inputs below that are labeled, "Aux Input" with purple wire "right" and yellow wire "left". I disconnected the Aux Input purple and yellow wires which I assume go to the tape machine and pluged in the right [red] and left [black]channel wire from the CD player. I left the top "right" and "left" wires in place. I also disconnected the tape deck electrical plug and pluged in the CD player plug in its place.

I turned the radio on,l turned the knob to Tape and turned the CD player on. All the lights lite up and the CD played, but I got no sound.

What am I doing wrong? Can anyone help me figure this out? Thank you.

Were those connections on the tape recorder or on the amp?

I did this to my 1963 Magnavox Astro-Sonic Console. I have my 5 disc CD Changer hooked up to it. All I can say is that you have to have it exactly right. If the plugs arn't plugged into the right jacks it wont work... I've have had to fiddle with mine a couple times to get it to work the way I want it... Some of the newer console have Aux plugs right on the back (My 1970s Magnavox Console does) but my older one does not... All I can suggest is try all different jacks until you get the sound you want.. When sound is coming out of all 4 of my Speakers I am happy!

My 8-track needs four wires for the connections:

Power
Ground
Left channel output
Right channel output

If you follow the wires back to where they came from, you should see one wire connected to the chassis, that is the ground. One wire will connect to a power supply capacitor, that is the Power connection. Two wires will connect to the source selector switch, those are the Left and Right audio inputs.

Connect the shields from the audio cables to the chassis ground. Connect the center conductors from the audio cables to the selector switch where the two wires previously were connected. You should be good to go.

I received this info from another forum I am a memebr of. This is what I did with my Maggie and I listen to tunes thru my PS1. Sounds amazing!!

Good luck and tell us how it works out.

A picture would help a great deal also with troubleshooting.
