My website is disappearing

My website is disappearing.

Yahoo has decided to close the Geocities Free websites and discontinue the URLs. There is no way I can afford their replacement sites.

Sorry to hear about that. You have a lot of valuable information about the history of turntables, etc. Have you saved back-up copies of all the pages and jumps on your PC's hard drive? If not, I'd recommend you do it asap.

Along this line, you might want to get in touch with some of the other phonograph related sites to see if there are options for free hosting available, or if there is anyone who could help you out.

Try http://forum.talkingmachine.info/ for starters. Some of the members there are especially knowledgeable about this sort of thing.

Good Luck!

Oh, Damn....

You're such a wealth of knowledge, and what you offer is invaluable to all. If I ever win the Lottery...LOL, I'd be reaching out to a lotta folks here. We need seasoned, experienced folk like you to keep our hobbies motivated. I'm not living in the past, but these old electronics are a wonder and have laid the groundwork to today's electronics, some of it a little crappy, though, for those who wanted to cut cost and mass produce.

Record-changer, I hope there is some other website/avenue where you can set up again, I'm sure you've touched many lives in here, including mine, and I truly appreciate all the info you've posted to educate us and bring a small group of collectors, hobbyists, etc. together to enjoy and restore these older relics. --BB

I have been searching for one. So far, at least one of the following limitations prevents me from selecting each one I have checked out:

- Monthly download limits (the site shuts down for the remainder of the month if too many people use it)
- Does not provide domain name (Yearly fee for that)
- Has its legal base of operations in a location where my religious beliefs are illegal
- Requires content to obey the Politically Correct religion
- Removes pages or cancels memberships if the webmaster does not like the content
- Limits the size of each page (I would have to further divide up my record changer and interchange pages)
- Prohibits image files or charges for them
- Requires online payment (violates my religion)
- Requires lump-sum yearly payment (I really can't afford payments, but no way can I can absorb yearly payments)

I now know the shutdown date, but don't have a new host I can trust yet. The date is October 26.

No information will be lost except the page visit counts. I do all web development on a duplicate of the site on my hard disk. I also have CD backups.

I am seeing a worse problem now. Most free hosts, if you exceed the monthly download limit, start charging for hosting the site. Sneaky!

I have a new hosting site! The url is in my signature. But be aware that the site is not yet fully loaded.

All of the record changer and audio files that were up before are now up and operating.

The other pages will go up as I get time to upload them. Having a site with over 200 pages takes some time. In the meantime, the Geocities site will not go down until October 26. I will post connecting links on it as I get new sections loaded.

But I discovered that I still have about 50 pages that were never put up after the last move, due to lack of time and bandwidth. Most of those will likely go up when I get the time to convert them to standard xhtml.

The website is now fully moved.

I do see another problem. Many of the posts I made in the past use links to the old site. If you come across a missing image, or a broken link, pm me and I will fix it.
