Electrolytic Education the hard way

by cmangeng » Thu Apr 03, 2014 7:54 am

Learned a good lesson today and thank goodness it only cost me a fuse.
Being a newbe to everything to do with jukeboxes and most electronics, I have a tendency to learn by hitting a few speed bumps along the way. Ron I have used up all the wet noodles available in Kitsap County. Apparently the cans of capacitors can be positive in polarity and be grounded to the chassis. After observing the amp that did work before I recapped it, no longer did after replacing the old electrolytics I was a bit disappointed.....did I mention frustrated too. After looking closer at the schematic, I noticed the (+) sides of the electrolytics were connected to the chassis (the cans were the positive on the old electrolytics). I knew exactly what I had done wrong before I even looked at the install. I am used to the chassis being the ground and the ground being negative, but things don't always work that way I have found out.
After correcting the error of my ways.....or at least some of them, I noticed a significant improvement in performance in the sound system, but it appeared to be coming out of only one channel, one side was still minimal. I swapped the RCA inputs and found the problem moved to the other side. Checked both cables-no brakes. Checked tone arm wires from the plug to the cartridge-no brakes. It appears to be in the cartridge. I ordered a new universal replacement cartridge for the Wurlitzer 3100 and hope that fixes it. :?:
