Rockola Tempo 2 1478

by Oljuke » Tue Aug 26, 2014 2:24 am

I was hoping someone may be willing to give me a little direction. I am fairly mechanically inclined but never worked on anything of this magnitude before. My problem is that my rockola 1478 tempo 2 120 select will no longer trigger a selection pin when the number is selected on the keyboard.

It will not select any of the pins. I have the drum out of the juke and it looks to be in good shape with all the ohms reading between the coils and the other side of the connection seeming good. Not really sure what I'm looking for here but I was hoping to direct wire the coils and get them to select but was unable to figure out exactly how and blew a fuse.

Was wondering if there is a way to test the selector drum or would you have any other suggestions as to what may be causing the issue...?

When I manually slide a pin over the rest of the functions work fine and it will find the record, play, and return the record. However the pins will not select on their own. As well, when I make a selection the record carousel begins to spin and everything else seems to work but no pins are triggered...

Any help would be greatly appreciated?

Thanks

this seems to be common on those old electro-mechanical machines.

If no pins are moving the pinwheel is the last place to look.

Often the problem is in the credit unit. This small box on the left wall (facing from the rear) has an electrolytic capacitor that determines pulse intensity/length. As it dries out the pulse become too weak. There are also contacts on a relay there which can become pitted and carbonized. While in there you may as well clean them up as per Ron's suggestions: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=6404

Dirty-oxidized pins on the two large Jones plugs will also cause this as well. Removing-replugging several time along with application of a good contact cleaner may help -but deal with the credit unit first.

Hello...I am new to the forum and am experiencing a similar problem with my project Tempo II 1485, the 200 play version of the the 1478.
Let me start out by saying I bought this thing years ago and it's been in dry storage for the last 20. Now that I have retired I can tackle some of my lingering projects. I was totally surprised to see this thing power up and actually produce some sound after sitting so long. I did a visual on electrolytics and transformers for oil or fluid leaks and then ran a power supply check and a filament check on all the vacuum tubes. I manually thumbed the grabber and drum motors and decided it was safe enough to spin up the ferris wheel. But before I did that I burnished and cleaned ever open relay or contactor I could find. The scan control panel works and I can manually select pins and observe the grabber is right on the mark for handling the vinyl....I cannot make a selection from the switches. In this thread I saw reference to the pulse from the accumulator that controls the reset coil. I believe I have the same problem and cannot find a dual electrolytic capacitor. It is a Sprague 14416; 300mfd and 150 mfd @350 WVDC. Can someone steer me to a suitable sub or a source.....I looked on Vern Tisdales http://www.verntisdale.com/ site and didn't see one. I know it is obsolete so what substitutions are permitted here.

In the meantime I am prepping to clean the carriage assembly and the selector assembly...... with the least impact on present alignments and adjustments. Any advice here will be greatly appreciated. I could use a schematic of the power control chassis too....it is not included in my instruction manual.

Years ago my dad passed and left me a favorite carbine, a 30 cal M1 built by Rock-Ola. 1st block, Serial number, 1,662,520 - 1,762,519| November, 1942 - November, 1943. I did not know that about David Rokola -Approximately 228,500 total Carbines were made by Rock-Ola: About 3.7% of M1 Carbines made. Me and My Rock-Olas......let's make some noise.

Thanks for a great site and thanks for the wealth of knowledge.

Hi Ed,

We offer the can capacitor in credit units of Rock-Ola models 1438 up to 1485:

Ed,
I was just curious, have you been able to fix the selector mech.? I had this J-box , 120 model 1478 with the same problem, I was told that most of the time the problem was in the dirty selector switches . I got frustrated with it & sold it.
