Juke 12" Drivers

OPINIONS:

I have a 62 Seeburg and a 79 Seeburg. The 62 DS-160 is non-working an will be a project for some time to come. The 79 "Disco" is working fine. The 79 needs new 12" drivers badly. One has a hole tore in it theother has a rip...both are getting worse it appears...

The opinions I have that I can see are:

(A) Pull the 12" drivers from the 62 and drop them in the 79.
(B) Pick up some 12" drivers from the local Best Buy to drop in
(C) Pick up some official "juke" drivers from one of the sources online.

Now, I am trying to do this as economical as possible. I worry that 1962 drivers won't be as decent sounding as my other 2 options though... opinions?

I have half a mind to pick up a couple Pile Drivers from ebay and drop them in.

Those two model drivers are not interchangeable - "Pile Drivers" are defiantly NOT suggested--
Check with the used parts guys, for Seeburg speakers used in all 160 models from the SPS-160 up. All are interchangeable.

...and here I thought an 8ohm driver was an 8ohm driver...

Neither model uses 8 ohm speakers-- DS is 16 and the SMC is 5 ohm--

... that would explain it!

EDIT: Do you know of any NEW/REPRO 5ohm speakers by chance. Vern's site has 8ohm speakers listed only.



One last thing... I know what the GAIN controls do... but what exactly do the BIAS controls do?

If you don't know what the "bias control" does, best if you stayed out of them--and the "gain control" also--as they must be set correctly to avoid damage to the whole system--- Notice that the factory (Red colored) GLUED those controls, so that they would "not turn themselves"--- Plus, at one time they had stickers on them warning against moving them-- Ron Rich

The problem is that the controls have been adjusted by prior owners. When i got the the unit, they were maxed out...

I have what I thought was a full set of manuals that I got from Victory Glass... but the INSTALLATION AND OPERATION manual says to refer to the SERVICE MANUAL on how to set the GAIN / BIAS but the only SERVICE MANUAL I seem to have is for the mech, not the amp.

Can you explain the procedure necessary to set the GAIN/BIAS or point me int he direction of the proper manual that gives this info?

If you purchased it from them, as a "complete" manual package, I suggest that you should complain, as it should contain the correct issue of the "electronics units", for your model phono. The BEST book was written by my late friend Tony Miller, called the Seeburg SHP-amp book, and is still available from VG and AJ, as far as I know--
Set the bias at 1.5 vdc, if it's a SHP-1 or SHP-3 code A or B. If it's a Code C SHP-3, set the bias at 1.7vdc, measured base to base on the pre drivers (or leave them alone, if the outputs are running cool). Set the gain so that the lower of the two channels is of equal volume when a mono signal is injected.
