Help with a Rockola 468

by bhanlon7 » Mon Dec 14, 2009 12:47 am

Hi,
I just got a Rockola 468 Grand Salon, but I am having trouble getting it to play. I am new to jukeboxes and electronics in general, so I may not have all my terminology right. Anyway, when I have the hood lifted and I press down the button that would be pressed when the hood is shut, the turntable spins for a few seconds, and then the breaker trips and the amplifier unmutes. When I reset the breaker the amp mutes again. When I try to play a song, the selection mechanism rotates, and then the bulb inside the circuit breaker flashes. I put a video on youtube so you can see what I am talking about http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqb0RiaqmWs Does anyone have any advice?
Thanks,
-Brian

PS, there is a high pitched noise throughout the video, that is just because of the mic on my camera, that noise is not from the jukebox

Brian,
Advise---purchase the service manual--available form www.alwaysjukin.com and elsewhere--
Question---What--Where is the "button that would be pressed--when the hood is down--"
Are you speaking of the selection buttons ?
Looking at the vid--it appears that the basket that holds the records may have jammed--where I don't know, but it is not advancing for some reason.
Is the service switch in the "operate" or "on" position ? Try the "scan" position for a second, to see if it will move--
Why do you think the CB is blowing ? The lamp flash is normal--

Thanks Ron! You were right, there was a jam! The gripper or grabber or whatever it is called just needed a little push. I wiggled it a bit and it started moving and then return to sender by elvis started playing. That song has never sounded bettter :D . Thanks again!

Brian,
Another word of advise--
Prior to operating it again, I would suggest that you purchase a can of SAE 20wt. ND oil (available from GOOD auto parts store, by the Qt., or GOOD Hrdwr. store as "3 in One SAE 20 MOTOR oil, in a 3 Oz "can"). Use it to oil ANYTHING that moves up in the gripper assembly--be sure to get it to flow between the two gears on the side of the gripper arm, and the bearings underneath, and inside of the gripper itself. Failure to do so WILL cause the guide pin in the rear to snap off--a REAL nasty job to fix-- ( I suspect it was jammed on that pin !) You should oil all motors, and the Turntable with it also- Ron Rich

Thanks for the tip, I'll pick up some oil on my way home from work today. What other types of routine maintenance or preventitive maintenance should I be doing? I do have the manual, but it is a bit water damaged so I may buy a new one.
