Wurlitzer OMT 45 Player

by amid80 » Mon Oct 09, 2006 3:21 am

Hi, can anyone give me information on the mechanism. Specifically the anti skate adjustment. Where is it and how do you adjust it? Also the end of record trip switch adjustment. Where is it and how do you adjust it. This is my first OMT and not familiar with it. I know I will have to get a manual, however I can't wait so I am looking for some quick advice. Thanks, Pat

I worked on several Wurlitzer units which did not have anti-skating. I had to increase the tracking force slightly to compensate.

If the unit has a velocity trip, there is no adjustment. The cycle starts when the arm speeds up at the end of the record.

Wurlitzer OMT

Hi and thanks for the reply. I did open access to the mech by removing the bottom plate. I found the end or record trip and there was an adjustment in the form of a hex head screw. It is now tripping off at the correct position. I am still having a skating issue and this is what I think I see since you say there is no anti skate adjustment. I believe that the needle and cartridge are not hitting the record correctly. The cartridge mount is very flimsy and looks to be easy to bend. I am also using an aftermarket needle that seems to be very close to the housing (there is not much play in the needle before it bottoms out.). I will continue to play with this and any advice that is given will be appreciated.

Wurlitzer OMT

Latest on the OMT. In regards to the skating it seems to have been the needle causing the problem. The OMT calls for a Shure 75c, I replaced damaged the needle that was in the box when I bought it with a no name replacement. Looking at it I thought that there wasn't enough vertical compliance. When the tonearm set down the weight from tonearm compressed the needle so that the plastic housing of the needle was resting on the record. This must have been a defective needle. I replaced the 75 with a 44 that had lots of compliance. It fit well in the cartridge and it now tracks and plays well. The only visible difference I could see between the 75 and the 44 is that the plastic housing used to push the needle into the cartridge is taller on the 44. It still fit well. :D

Several points:

1. The vertical angle of the 75 cartridge is different than the angle on the 44. The styli do fit each other's cartridges, but the angle of the cartridge body to the arm has to be changed to use the other stylus correctly.

2. Check that tracking force. If it is too heavy, the same damage will happen again. Both 44C and 75C have a force range of 3 to 5 grams.

3. If the unit was recently shipped, the damage could be shipping damage. It's also possible that the setdown is too rough if the arm damping is not working.
