General Electric G518 Stereo Console

by turd_ferguson » Fri Jan 01, 2016 4:08 pm

Hello Everybody!

I have been scouring the depths of the internet over the last few days in an effort to find the operation/service manuals for the General Electric G518 Stereo Console. My searches have proved unsuccessful and I'm hoping the wealth of knowledge among members here may help.

Here are a few photos of the console:

The turntable actions work, the record will drop, tonearm finds the correct edge based on record size selected, attempts to play, and tonearm returns and turntable shuts down after play is complete. I only say attempts to play because I believe the needle is in such bad shape it does not track well. When it does, it sounds as though the speed could use adjustment.

I believe I have found the correct needle here: http://www.turntableneedles.com/Needle-509_p_1094.html
But I am still unsure. I get tones from the needle and cartridge. I can hear scratching through the speakers if I run a finger across the needle.

My original plan for the unit was to gut it, the acoustic speaker boxes would become vinyl storage, rebuild the compartment under the dust cover to house a better quality turntable, and sand/refinish the console. I am questioning my original plan after listening to the radio and seeing the turntable actions though. It works well and the speakers sound phenomenal. I would almost hate to gut it.

Thoughts and opinions?

Respectfully,
~ Turd

Take off the back and get the numbers off the receiver/amp chassis. Don't go by cabinet or model numbers. I'm trying to get rid of this one. Some guy, cleaning out his mom's condo. didn't want it to go to someone who would turn it into a bar or fish tank. It seems to be a higher-end model with 12" woofers and at least 2-3 tweeters per side, mounted in front of the woofers. The reel-to-reel controls are stiff, from lack of use, and needs to be serviced. It's got that weird external speaker connection on the back, and it does have a hum. Just too many consoles up in the house and garage, and it's free for the taking. --BB
