Hi
Bought a Trixette record player at the weekend.
Plugged in and just got a loud hum. After a clean and lube the Garrard deck works great but no sound out of the speaker. Really simple electronics just 2 valves UL41 and UY41. priced these up on auction site at 24 pounds which is a bit steep. If I did buy the valves would it be wise checking out anything else before plugging them in. Obviously I dont want to spend this and then blow the valves. I have a little experience in soldering and using a multimeter.
Any help greatly appreciated

Don't worry about the valves or tubes, as we call them here in the good ol' USA, just yet. They are probably still good and you won't get rid of the hum. You first need to replace the filter capacitor. Indeed, you should replace all the electrolytic capacitorswhich is a lot cheaper than the tubes. That's what is giving you the hum. The bad caps are also very hard on the parts down wind so refrain from plugging it in until you get those caps replaced. There are plenty of sites that explain how this is done. Thom

Auction sites have quite a few stylus and cartridge dealers listed. While I cannot recomend any one outfit I can say that the dealers have been very helpful to me and I often purchase from one or the other. If you are willing to check around I am sure you will find that which you need.

The hum is caused either by the capacitors or by a loose connection to the pickup.

The lack of sound is either a loose pickup wire or a bad pickup.
