Al,
You and I are "talking about" different things--there is no way to "see" the spring that operates the transfer arm--Please look at the Service Manual, and use the same terms as used in it. That way I have at least a slight chance of helping you--- Ron Rich

Just for clarity: The clamp arm is what hold the record against the turntable,. The lift arm is what comes up through the magazine to lift the record.
If the machine has never been able to operate at 45 rpm and the T-T does turn and mech scans, that clearly points to speed unit failure.
As for why occasionally the mech won't start up again when the clamp is slightly pulled back, it is possible that the contacts on the clamp arm switch (right under the clap itself are not making when the clamp is opened. there are also contacts on (IIRC) the vertical stack that close to put the clamp arm set into the circuit.
When the unit stops dead and pulling back on the clamp won't start the motor up (@33) --carefully-- use a plastic stick to slightly jog the clamp arm contacts while the arm is pulled back. If that doesn't restart the motor. use that same stick to jog the vertical contact stack.
BTW: Have you wiggled the plug from the speed unit? That style of plastic plug is generally OK, but the contacts do get erratic at this late date.

Hi Rob,
Once again--we sorta dis-agree--
On the motor starting while the mech is in "play position" in either 33 or 45 rpm mode, only "1/2" of the motor run cap is in the circuit, at that time. If the motor /drive train is lacking proper lubrication, or has an incorrectly installed motor coupling, many motors do not have enough torque to start, when in "play"-- Ron Rich

is their such a drawing showing how many insulator sections are between each contact gap on the reversing relay on mechanism..

Hi Al,
Maybe ?--see the page in the Service Manual that shows the reversing switch adjustments--

Hi, everyone, first time on this forum, I know this sounds a bit silly but if the record is not being lifted fully into the play position, then it is possible that something is obstructing the lift arm, I have come across this several times, and nine times out of ten it has been that the record clamp spindle has pushed out the centre of a record that has been dinked and an insert fitted, the centre tends to fall down onto the record lift arm and stops it lifting the record fully.

It's not "silly" at all--the record lift arm, on the Seeburg Mechanism, is spring "pulled", up, (forced down !), and designed only to lift a record's weight. I have seen "title strips" that would jam it. Ron Rich

Thanks for that reply Ron, I thought maybe someone would say stop stating the obvious first place to look, I just thought that if the record insert had shattered. then there might be a very small piece lodged on the lift arm where it pivots.

Just received the auto-speed capacitor rebuild kit for replacement, I notice there is no positive or negative marking on the large cap...does it matter in the wire hook up...cap type DAYTON 2MDV3. kit 45TASU-1

Hi Al,
No difference--it's an "AC cap"--

Hi Al,
You are welcome--IMHO, "slow" is the correct way to do it !!

Where can I purchase the contact reversing relay, item K657, Part 245939 blades on the mechanism or purchase single contact Blades.
Contact G, Blade 4 on the mechanism service notes page 50 shows double sided contact blade.
My relay has pits on one side and nothing on the other side of the blade to make contact H on blade 5.
I found this during trouble shooting reversing relay for scan problem.

Hi Ron I have done all that was required and installed new cap set for the auto speed unit and I am down to one problem now , 45 rpm record plays slow as if still in the 33.1/3 play mode...I have check the contacts and followed the trouble shooting guide and the service notes and the record is still slow...one thing though the power relay coil does not seem to energize ????
Any help here would be great...have I missed something along the way..
Al
