Seeburg DS100 Sound

No help in manual on this one. Slot "E3" has always worked fine. Today, when I select "E3" the record plays and no/or barely discernible sound. Other 49 slots/records sound just fine.

Any ideas what would cause this?

Now the mechanism is stopped in front of slot "K4" and will not load the record and the rejection button does not function. I used the service switch and the mech started scanning again. I once again chose slot "E3" for the 4th time. Guess what, this time I now have sound at slot "E3"? Is there any explanation for this unusal action?

Sure--there is a great explanation--I just don't know what it could be ?
The "sound system" knows not which slot was selected--the sense, detent, and record load systems also do not know one "slot" from another--

Darrell, this sounds like two unrelated problems.

The missed selection(s) may be due to a weak, slow heating 2050. Set the mech in play mode then watch the top of the 2050 tube as you press the reject button. When it trips the tube should have a deep blue/violet glow around the orange cathode. Sky blue indicates a weak tube.

The sound problem may be muting/squelch contacts on the mech. Since both channels appear to be out the amp is less likely to be at fault but check to be sure that the 6973 tubes are not glowing red plates if this happens again. The minus 30V supply feeds both the tube bias and the transistor preamps.

Thanks guys for the reasoning.

The phono never missed any selections and was playing for about a half hour before this temporary problem occured (no sound) at slot "E3", while all other slots/records had excellent sound, both before and after the 3 times I selectedslot "E3". Why using the service switch to get the mech moving after it stalled at "K4" resolved the problem remains unknown and the phono is operating like new!

If that motor quit and all you did to re-start it--AND it played K-4---was use the service switch, I would guess the scan control unit failed for some reason at that time. A good test of that function is to play both A and B sides ( select them prior to it finding either) of the last record on the right of the rack (K-9/K-0 on a 100 select--V-8/V-9 on a 160 select mech). If it plays the K-9, scans and stops at the K-0 selection, either the ramp under the TMU is not correctly adjusted, or the play control itself, is "messing up"-- Ron Rich
