old record player cabinet?

Hi I have just bought an old cupboard and I think it may be an old record player cabinet. It is made of wood with bakerlite panels and handles. It has a top section that opens out , a drawer and a cupboard. In the cupboard there is some kind of old electrical device which has a spindle coming out of it that then feeds up to the top section. I want to find out more about it and if it is in fact a record player cabinet and if so from what era. I will take some pics but before I do and I upload them I wanted to check this is the right forum to ask on - are there people out there that know about these things? If not any ideas where to go to find out more?
Thanks in anticipation
Stephanie

I think your question is fine here, since you don't know what it is, and are asking for someone to ID it.
Normally, if a question or comment is posted in the wrong forum, we simply move it to the correct one and then send the poster a PM containing a polite note that the post has been moved, along with a jump to the new location so he/she can find it.
Look forward to seeing your photos.

Stephanie, yes, you will find out more if you posted a few photos. Lots of people on here who'll be willing to help you, if they can.

I must confess, I've never seen anything quite like it, but I'm doubtful that that ever held a record player--at least not one that was factory installed. Possibly, it could have been designed to house a component stereo system? A sewing machine? A bar?
Don't know what the electronic thing could be....

Hello Stephanie,
The electrical item looks like a very large variable capacitor.
Could this box/cabinet have housed a crystal set? The problem with this idea is that the fuse that is in circuit, dates from around the 70's.

The cabinet looks quite professionally made.
Whatever that thing is that's in there, its location looks odd.
I can't work out the purpose of that single rod that comes out of something "electrical" with two substantial terminals on the top. That definitely doesn't look as if it was originally meant to be there.
The cabinet looks like it may have been some sort of lady's comprehensive work box. The way the top opens out suggests that the two halves of the lid would have been used as receptacles for something or other, as would be the drawer, ribbons, cottons etc., maybe?
Can't suss out the reason for the lines of holes in the base and the top. I think like the electrical bit, they may have been a later addition. Maybe someone kept rabbits in it?
It's still a mystery.

The shaft on the tuner (variable capacitor) is geared so it should be easy to turn when trying to find a station.
My take on this is that someone was trying to make or fit a radio into this cabinet the tuner is very large about the same size as the one in my old ham's shortwave radio.

I think this is about as close as we're going to get to solving the mystery.

Hi everyone
thanks for your replies. Having taken the electrical thing out I now think its maybe some kind of heater - it doesn't have stacking plates like a capacitor and the rod doesn't turn. It is made of thin wire wrapped round some kind or white chalky stuff that I think looks similar to the stuff they used to wrap wire round in electric heaters. So probably nothing to do with record players! Goodness knows what tho!
thanks for your help anyway
Stephanie

You might have found a quack medical device sold to gullible people.
That might be an ozone generator - possibly a Tesla coil.
The rod may be charged with high voltage when on.
The "idea" was to expose food to ozone to kill bacteria.
