Hey Ron,

Back again with a series of questions regarding the coin mech and the record rack on a Seeburg "C"

This time with a question about credit counts and how to adjust them. I was wondering what the count is supposed to be for each coin. Currently it is 5 for a quarter, 2 for a dime and 3 for a nickel. What is the correct credit count normally? Thinking logically since a dime is more, you should get more plays than the nickel. I had to buy a new credit plunger for the dimes selection as it was missing when I first started diagnosing this issue. I put the plunger through the then empty solenoid and everything works but I think that the solenoid is placed in the wrong space beneath the credit switch wheel. The thought of repositioning it looks like it would be a nightmare. Let me know if I my first impressions are incorrect, I hope they are.

It shows the scratched flip side of a 45 from the D7 slot on the Seeburg. I placed it flush on a clean table and observed the record closely and I could see slight warping but not enough to cause it to rub against the record rack. I placed it back into the D7 slot and observed closely as it was playing and I did not see any problems with clearance. How else could this scratching occur?

I also noticed that some records when playing are centered better than others. Do I need to reposition the record rack? If so, how to I know when it is truly centered? It looks like some slots are a bit wider than others, is that a bent rack or are there ways to adjust them all individually?

Hi Don,
If phono is set for dime play, only two coils are used--these two coils would be located in the: #1 hole, and the #5 hole--just as yours, was set. If you had a "flipper type rejector", both the nickel, and dime switches were wired to the dime coil. If this was originally a non-flip coin rejector, someone needed to modify it so that it returned nickels. In it's original configuration, the phono was set at 5 cents play, and would have had the nickel coil in the # 1 hole, the dime coil (with the plunger ), in the # 2hole, and the quarter coil in the number 6 hole--or later in the # 5 hole. See your service manual for instructions, if you still have questions on this.
As for rack problems--before you do anything here, check the clutch --have you PROPERLY oiled it with 20 wt. ND oil-- if so, check the adjustments--pay particular attention to #3, adjustment, being sure that the follower is down as far as it can go--

Okay thanks will do. I will check out the clutch as well. The only thing I cringe at with regards to the clutch is that it appears the only way you can really get to that is by taking the entire record rack off. (no thanks been there done that) unless I really have to I won't. I have read/ seen on youtube that the proper way to oil that clutch is to actually take it out, clean it and then saturated it with 20 SAE oil. Speaking of oils, when I oil the motor I use 20 SAE but when I go for springs (to prevent rust) and other moving part, wheels etc I use "Zoom Spout" because it has that long extension that can get to places even behind the mechanism.

Hi Don,
Nope--you ab-sol-lut-ley do NOT need to remove the record rack to remove the clutch ! I describe how I do it in my Seeburg Mechanism Guide ( PM me if you wish to purchase it). As for "Zoom Spout", I do not recommend it. I use a "Valve Spout" oilier, but if I did not have that, I would toss out the Zoom Spout provided oil, and use the container filled with 20 wt. Be VERY aware of what you see on the "internet"--I find most of it to be the"blind, leading the blind" ! Ron Rich
