SS 160 picks up record then ejects it , it never plays

by havarob » Tue Aug 30, 2011 3:54 am

I have a ss160 seeburg and it scans and picks up a record and just ejects it and never plays. I checked and oiled the plunger and thats working great. I know its mechanical because i turn it by hand and watch the full process load a record and the eject it . Can it be the clutch? How hard is it to remove the clutch if that's the problem?

Thank you very much for your time

Hi Rob,
I looked over your posts here--and it seams that you have had this problem before--
My (self serving) suggestion is that you purchase a copy of my "Seeburg Mechanism Guide", and a copy of any Seeburg Service manual that deals with the mechanism (contact me off list, if you wish).
I would further hope that you are not "turning the mech.", via the turntable !
To determine if your problem is electrical, or mechanical is very simple. Either remove the "mech" plug from the amp. or remove the AC power to the amp and make a selection. If it now plays, the problem is electrical--if not, it's mechanical.
You say you "oiled the plunger"--if you are speaking of the detent plunger, you "done wrong"--it should be dry.
If the problem is mechanical, I devoted a few pages to proper lubrication of the mech, and a few paragraphs on what to do about that problem in the Guide.

This is a new machine, I fixed the STD160, that had the same symptom. Now I have this new machine, the ss160 and the plunger works perfect on this one. But it just will not play a record.
