Sears and Roebuck stereo/ phonograph question

by ssgmac » Tue Jun 28, 2011 7:29 pm

Hello. I am new to the site. I have a sears and roebuck silvertone phonograph that I am trying to get working. As far as I can tell it is a mid '60's model. The power cord is missing so I can't even begin to see what needs to be replaced. The radio chassis number is 52863220, record changer mechanism number is 52857841 and there is a stamp on the inside of the cabinet that says model number 5066. If anyone could help me out as far as what year it is and possibly where I can find a replacement cord for it I would really appreciate it. I want to get it up and running so that I can listen to some of the records we have. Thanks again!

Ok update. I temporarily attached a 16AWG power cord to the unit and all the lights came on and the turn table started spinning. The arm even swung over. I am not picking up any radio stations and I need a new needle to see if the records will play. Im having trouble finding the correct cartridge or needle. I see needle # 57-5824D and cartridge # 57-5823D. Im not sure which I need to buy. Any advise? Also...how can I tell if those vacuum tubes need to be replaced? They all lit up when I plugged the unit in but they all have burn marks on the bottom. As I remember they got really hot and that may not necessarily mean they are bad. Again any advise? Thanks!

You should check with Sears--surprisingly, they can often come up with OLD parts for their "stuff".
You might also try www.needles4turntables.com or posting a photo here-- Ron Rich

Hey. I found the needle and it's been ordered. I was looking for a silvertone needle when I needed to look for sonotone. Should get here this week and then I'll be able to see if the speakers work. Sears was no use after providing them with the numbers. Anyone advise me on finding a replacement power cord? If I need to make my own to run into the system, would 16 AWG be enough?

As a professional restorer, if I were you, I'd get the set restored.
Or else the aged components will shortly fail, usually destroying other parts.... some mighty expensive.
There is also risk of fire.
Just because it "lights up" don't mean a darn.
Play it smart.

Looks like an EV 150 with a missing yoke.
Need a new cartridge now.

On these cartridges, the needle slides in at an angle under that metal clip and snaps into place. You should hear the "click" when it is properly seated --BB

Thanks, Matt! What is a missing yoke? Unfortunately, I snapped a piece off when I got it...you can see on the picture the broken piece. It is the little black arm piece that comes out of the silver part (end of the arm) on the top of the picture. I have the silver "ball" that screws on to that black piece but I snapped the little black male part that screws in to the "ball". Confusing??

Is that the cartridge in the picture? Or, am I missing the cartridge??

I snapped the #17 piece in the picture called "Retractable Cartridge Bracket"...

I wouldn't worry about the "retractable" feature as long as the cartridge is mounted properly and plays.
You'll need a whole new cartridge though.
EV 150D, maybe a 149D. (lighter tracking)
Since I don't know offhand the tracking specs of that particular setup.

The manual says:

Cartridge EV149A (Cat. No. 5823)
Part number 33-392-0

When I searched, I found this one but there is a waiting list: http://www.turntableneedles.com/Astatic-763d_p_629.html

With that being said, suggestions on where I can buy now? Thanks a bunch, Matt!
