Rowe R87

So i have a really weird one. I have an Rowe R87. I cant adjust the volume, The volume control seems to be acting like a balance control. I checked the volume control connections on the inside top lid, the volume control connection on the amp, and the connections on the power transformers and they all look right. Any Suggestions?

A little more info would help here;

-How/where is the volume control. that is, in the phono or is it an RVC?

-How many pots on the control. These machines can be operated as two mono amps with separate volume controls either in different rooms or concentric pots in one box.

If the balance is shifting from one side to the other it would seem that you have control of one channel ---?

Do you have the doc's that come with these machines.

Is this a phonograph you just acquired --have you had this phono awhile and this problem just started ? Are any other, then the cabinet speakers connected ? Are the cabinet speakers connected correctly ? Which model amp is installed in this phono ? Ron Rich

Been restoring this box. It's the built-in volume control, no external speakers, it has the stock rowe 125 watt stereo amp and it's set to stereo.

As Rob said, the volume control mounted in the box has one knob with both left and right channel pots on the same shaft. If the wiper arm was broken on one of the two, it would have the effect of moving the balance left to right as you move the volume up and down.

If you turn the volume all the way down, do you still hear sound out of one channel? If you do, it might be the pot for that channel that is broken.

You can always disconnect the volume control from the amp and check it out with an ohmmeter.

I suggest that you make up a test volume control, if you do not have a 5 pin plug then use the one in the internal wiring.

Connect cables to pins i, and 5, link pins 1 & 5 and take these wires to one end of a 10k log control, take pin 3 wire to the wiper on the control. This test control alleviates problems on the internal wiring.

I would also check that the leads off of the pre-amp lamps are still intact.
