Where do I start?

I bought a beautiful Magnavox record player today. I plugged it in and it didn't work, there is some kind of power issue. I took off the back and I can say that it has not been opened in at least 40 years by the amount of thick dust.

How should I go about trouble shooting this or starting to repair it?

I should also add that I have no clue what model this is, or what year... Any info would be great!

From your somewhat murky photos it looks like you have a tube unit. That will place it at, or above 50 years old. It is critical that -all- capacitors that couple stages be replaced and probably the filter electrolytics.

The fact that it is dead my be a simple as a bad switch or broken wire in the power cord. At the other end it might be due to a blown fuse indicating shorted rectifier tube and/or shorted capacitors.

The good news is that because there seems to be no radio, the circuits are probably very simple. The pickup cartridge will probably need to be replaced too.

The neverending curiosity to power up these old (40+ yrs) units as-is, often results in expensive failures of the power transformers and associated components.

Corroded switches also fail to work, as well as deteriorated mechanisms.

Best to locate a knowledgable and reputable servicer/restorer to completely go over the unit, and address the numerous issues.
Once restored, another couple of decades of service can be had, reliably.
It's always worth the one-time investment.
