Magnavox Astro-Sonic sounds gritty

by zwiebelspaetzle » Thu May 24, 2012 8:51 pm

Hello,

A couple years ago, I scored an Astro-Sonic console, model #2P3763. It sounded great then, but now has a gritty sound. I've tried listening through headphones, and the grit is still there, so I don't think it's a speaker problem. Any suggestions?

Also, if anybody knows where to get specs, a repair manual, and/or inverse palnut tool, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks!

Magnavox uses a lot of electrolytic capacitors in their solid state chassis which typically have a safe lifetime of 15 to 20 years and then have progressively less performance afterwards. You may have 60 cycle AC being imprinted on the audio from a leaking capacitor in the power supply. If you will take the back off of your console and look for the chassis model number printed on the chassis which looks like "R204-03-00" for example and do a google search on it, you may find a source for a schematic, or post the number here, perhaps someone will have the information that you need. Good Luck.
