Rowe Ami Jel loud hum

by Markieboy123 » Sun Dec 08, 2013 10:45 am

Hi All
I have just acquired a Jel with a few issues
Firstly there is a loud hum on power up which is louder from the right side speaker even with the phono leads disconnected.
The amps and valves are looking a bit dirty and untouched
Can anyone point in the where to start first
Also I'm trying to source a few parts that are missing off the juke
The coin box door and the plastic surround that sits on top of the mech are missing
Tried searching the internet for spares but to no avail

Regards Mark (UK)

If it hums w/pickup leads disconnected and "looks untouched" --Do NOT use it until the amp is rebuilt--.

120 Hz hum is associated with failed filter caps and on these Rowe amps there is the added complication of fixed bias on the output tubes. If this bias fails the finals will overconduct placing a heavy load on both power supply and output transformers. It will also rapidly ruin whatever is left of tube life.

Again, get it rebuilt, or do it yourself.

A schematic is here: http://www.verntisdale.com/AMIschem.htm

If this is your first attempt at servicing this type of mech I recommend a manual.

Thanks for the advice Rob.
Was thinking of cleaning the base of the tubes and the pots they sit in
But what you say sounds terminal

coin box door--- try victory glass, coin op whearhouse or durfee coin op. do google search for juke box parts. they will be there. plastic surround is usually refered to as the "dress cap" same sources as above. good luck

Thanks for the replys
Will check out those places
Ideally would like to find those parts in the UK if possible

Just had a proper look at the rear where the amps are situated and the wiring is totally shot and disintegrated in my hands especially the butchered wiring in and out of the step down transformer
Would like to rewire it myself can anyone suggest what size cable/flex would do the job

Regards Mark
