Gripper Arms

by DoghouseRiley » Mon Jul 22, 2013 7:13 pm

You can always learn something, can't you?
Looking at my Rock-Ola 443, I noticed the gripper on the tip of the arm wasn't exactly level with the edge of the record as it played. The point of the "V" seemed to be slightly higher. I checked my 468 and this was the same. Then I watched carefully as it removed the record. The "V" being slightly higher meant that as it moved to grip the record, the lower flange of the "V" lifted it slightly before it gripped. I couldn't see it being a fault on both. So I worked out that as the gripper arm raises the record in an arc, this was to ensure the record centre lifted cleanly off the turntable spindle.

Riley,
I hope so--it's my understanding that you only fail to lear new things, if, you close your mind, and/or, die.
On all of the machines that use that style "gripper", it is incumbent to watch it operate, from time to time to insure that the "V" "SLIDES" to the record before it attempts to lift it up. If not doing so, it indicates a lubrication problem--every time, which will cause it to "miss" or "throw" records.

Another point with gripper arms is to check they put the record back exactly in the centre of its slot and the record isn't rubbing against the plastic part on the top of the divider as it goes in and out as it will get scratched.

Riley,
I have never seen that problem as a "gripper arm" problem. It has always been a basket detent problem--
or a bent basket seperator---

You're correct Ron, but the problem is "associated" with the arm as the arm will be causing the damage. The positioning of the arm doesn't change, the adjustments made are to the carousel, to allow the arm to remove/replace the record cleanly.
