Strange caps ??

by Ron Rich » Fri Jul 17, 2015 8:21 pm

Hi All,

I have just run into something I have never seen before-
Working on a 1950's AMi add on AVC unit. It has two "strangely marked" Lytic caps, and I am not sure what to replace them with ?
1st one marked:
44-53-01
+10-50DC
2nd one marked:
44-52-01
+20-450DC
The "Plus mark" (+) may denote the pos. end of the cap, however both also have the band indicating the neg end.
Can anyone "splain me" these markings, and suggest what I should use as replacements ??
BTW--If anyone has a schematic on this unit, I would appreciate a copy !!
Thanks,
Ron Rich

First cap is 10 uf @ 50 volts.

Second cap is 20 uf @ 450 volts.

Some electrolytics come with the plus and minus marked on them.

Ron, here is a page with pic's and some info (BTW: it is called H-2260)

I tried to find the spares I have in the "Little Closet Of Horrors" but they are way in back and I can't climb in far enough. the other is in my I but there are wargames on a table in front and heavy EV PA speakers under the table.

The ones I have would not be much help since I had to redesign them when I eliminated the stupid B+ switching.

As designed, there are only two polarized caps in there. All the caps should be replaced. AMI had a goofy reverse drive AGC concept and it also used a cap with one lead that goes to the time constant and the other gets switched to B+ during play. The idea there was to use the momentary short that a charging cap has to inject some B+ into the time constant to hasten un-squelch. All that had to go in my case.

Someone did post a hand drawn schematic a couple of years ago on one of the forums.

Hi Guys,
Figured it out--the upper numbers on each cap are "house" part numbers--
lower are the values
Thanks to all !
