Cross reference for Darlington Transistor

by jukebox-steve-inindy » Thu Jul 07, 2011 12:46 am

Hello to all. I am currently working an a Rowe R-81 and it is blowing the fuse on one of the driver boards and in the past on the later Rowe amps replacing the Darlington transistors usually fixed the problem. My problem with this one is I have not been able to find a cross reference to a currently available replacement and the service manual I have only lists them as Darlington power transistors. The amp number is R-3812A and the information stamped on the transistors reads S-305B and under that number it also has the number 6849. Could anyone help with with a number for a suitable replacement?
Thanks to anuone who could help me out.

Ken,
Thanks for the link!
I looked but I don't think they are the ones I need. I also think that the amp currently in it is not original to the jukebox. My main reason for this thought is because the amp has printed on the chassis that it is model # R-3812A and 50 watt and according to the service manual it should be a 64 watt amp. Plus the service manual shows both PNPs and NPNs and the amp I have has all 4 transistors with the same numbers on the casings. All 4 visually look like they are the originals or at least have been in place for a long time.

Steve,
An old, retired friend of mine, who used to work on them says--"off the top of his head" that he thinks SK 30009's (RCA--also NLA--but someone MIGHT have some, or you may be able to cross that to an NTE/EGC #) were a cross number--but like I said--an OLD friend whose memory, he admits is, sadly, fading--

Ron,
Thanks for the information. I could not find anything on the SK30009 but I did come up with an RCA part SK3009. It crosses to an NTE121. Glad my ticker is still in ok shape, I looked at the price on Mouser...OUCH!!!! $20 each.......LOL
I might look in to making the necessary connection changes to use an amp from an R-83. I have a few of these sitting on the shelf. It looks like it will involve changing the volume and input connections.

Thanks again,
Steve

Steve,
It is entirely possible that I have embellished the zero's in that number--my dyslexia does this at times, especially with zeros( and 7's and 4's, for some unknown reason)--Check it first !
However $20.00 is not out of line for that type of transistor, in today's market, IMHO--- Ron Rich

Hi Steve,

The standard amp in the R-74 through to R-82 was the 64 watt 601-02179 in Europe 2179 there was an option of a 120 watt amp on number 601-07406.
The amplifier that you discribe I feel is out of an earlier jukebox maybe out of one of the MM series of jukeboxes that 305 transistor sounds familar.

I agree with Ron $20 is a good price I wish we could buy in at that price in the UK.

Hi Ron and Alan,

Thanks to both of you for the information. I do agree that the $20 is a fair price, its just the old geezer in me....LOL.
I'm going to check out the local (real) electronics store here in Indianapolis to see if they have any of the originals for less. It has been here since 1964 and the place is an amazing piece of history.

Hi Steve,

I remember this amplifier now the driver boards had some oddball transistors on them (with tophat type heatsinks) and the boards always seemed to be overheated.

Somebody on Ebay is selling one of the amps in the USA.

Alan
