"Hide Glue" from Phono-Boom period

by jnorman111 » Mon Oct 15, 2007 6:43 pm

A very advanced phono collector recently told me that if I can find some "hide glue" from the phonograph period before, or around WW1, which he has not been able to locate, he would help me with my job if I would give him the glue. Anybody have some?

Hide glue is a form of wood glue, available in any lumber supply or hardware store.

(J.M.J.) Thank you for the response. What is confusing me is the WHY of this quest for "hide glue" from the manufactoring period by a MAPS member of 20 or more years who has dinked around on his own cabinets of 30 or more phonos and music boxes. He said he would come to my home in his town to help me if I can locate the anitique "hide glue" and give him the unused amount left over from my job. He has been looking and has not been able to find the real stuff used back during manufactoring. But WHY?

Maybe some ingredient of an old formulation was banned by the EPA.

Or maybe the animal rights movement has removed it from the market since I bought my last bottle. It's made from cowhide and horsehide.

Hide glue is available from any player piano supply Co. http://www.player-care.com/ is one. It is the proper glue for player restoration as it is applied hot and sets quickly and can be broken apart easily by the next restorer 50 years from now.
