Stereo EV cartridge problem ?

I have a Magnavox magnasonic x10 small console. The turntable is the usual micromatic model : W 6030901. It has the original EV grey stereo cartridge 3 wires plugged into the back of the cartridge and 1wire to the ground shield I believe. It also has maybe the original needle.

My question is. The unit runs relatively quiet with the slightest of motor noise but as soon as the tone arm swings around and lays on the vinyl, I get a low frequency hum or a grumble noise. It's not very loud but you can hear it during quiet passages. As soon as the arm lifts to shut off the sound goes away.

Cartridge going bad ? Wires crossed or grounding out ? Stylus shot ?

The only marking on the grey electro voice cartridge was on the side in blue pin: 342.
But can't find that model number any where online.

What are your thoughts on the hum , grumble and where to find a replacement cartridge or a cross reference number.

Thank you for your time....

Drive's are deteriorated, possibly the motor mounts too.
Old lubricants are dried up through decades of neglect.
All this contributes to "noise".

+1 to what Matt says. The fact that you can hear the noise through the speaker when the arm is on the record shows that the cartridge is working well enough to pick up the noise that you don't hear otherwise. That is actually a good sign.

Got it ! Thank you both for the info. I've done some investigating and this is what I found. The shop I bought it from lubed moving parts, set speeds and changer action.
I pulled the back off and removed the changer from the consol. Yes the changer was lubed but probably not everything.
When I pulled the platter off the 2 idler wheels looked original and pretty hard but they did look ok and kinda bend a little so not rock hard.
But I believe I found the noise, it's coming from the smaller of the two idler wheels. As soon as the wheel engages to the spindle it makes the rumble sound I hear . I hear it softly without the record on but when the arm hits the plater the cartridge amplifies it . So where do I get a new idler wheel and should I replace both. When I pulled the small one to inspect it it had stamped on the rubber : B24 and c0027 or c9027.
But with out that wheel chater the system runs quite.

So ideas on idler wheel replacement ? Cheers
