Grundig 5490 Radio Information Needed.

by hitchhiker » Thu Jun 01, 2006 8:12 am

I just bought a Grundig 5490 large tube-type radio which will need some work to restore, but is basically in good condition. I need to find manuals, schematics, tube lists, etc for this radio.

The tuning indicators work for FM, but the three other bands do not move when I turn the right hand dial.

The case is essentially flawless.

The sound plays without any static, but is weak.

The left combination knob rings just spin and I do not perceive any stereo adjustment when moving that adjustment.

Any helpful information you can send my way would be very much appreciated.

I am very happy to add this radio to my collection. It and my Grundig 5088 will occupy a proud display position in my den!

Do you know anyone in California who restores the electronics in these radios?

Thanks and Best Regards,

David

The problem is that the dial cord has either broken or has slipped off the pulleys.

Either way, it is usually easily fixed. Often it just needs to be rethreaded.

The dial cord usually begins at the tuning capacitor, where it is attached to a metal wheel. It then wraps around the tuning knob shaft several times, then follows pulleys up to the dial pointer to move it. The cord then returns via more pulleys to the tuning capacitor wheel again. A spring at the wheel keeps it taut.

Thanks for your reply.

I have not taken the back off the radio yet. I will look inside and see what I can see.

Dave
