Free play/ coin operation on a Wurlitzer 3300

Hey guys, first off, I've been lurking around on this site for a month or so and what I've learned here has been immeasurably helpful. So thank you for the help so far, especially Ron Rich.

Now the task I have at hand is a Wurlitzer 3300 that for the most part works fine on free play. What I'd like to tackle first is getting the machine coin operable. The free play switch seems to do nothing. Do I start there or is that controlled by the coin register. Or do I start from the ground up at the slug rejector. All parts seem to be there and I've located the necessary fuses. Any other general advice?

Hi Aaron,
I assume someone has "set" the phonograph to play for no coins--the "free play button" only works when the phono is set for coins--pushing it allows one "free play"per push-- The usually thing done on that model is the spring in the Playrac is wrapped around the credit wheel in the wrong direction so it pulls the wheel open rather than closed, Simply un-hook it on one end and re-wrap it in the other direction to set it back on coin play--then WASH the Slug Rejector in hot soapy water--rinse, dry it, then look at your service manual for settings you may want-- Ron Rich

That's the kind of answer I came here for, thank you! On your advice, I bought the service manual for this unit and it stops short of a few other questions I had about setting it up with 33 1/3 records and such. Are you aware of any other manuals for wurltzers? I'm not sure if the service manual came new with the machine or maybe I'm missing an "owners manual"

I can't recall seeing an "owners Manual" for a WurliTzer (USA) product. Check with the "book suppliers" listed above ??
Seeburg issued what they called an "Information and Operation Manual" ( I&O) for most models ( a few were called "Maintenance Manuals").
I dono what the other companies did in this regard, as sales of jukeboxes were NOT ( supposedly) made to the public---just "operators", who had trained "tech people" that attended factory held "service schools"-- Ron Rich

Aaron, there is any setup required for 33 operation. If the machine is working correctly it will switch to 33 when a small hole disk is brought up and mounted.

If it fails to switch check for a small two-pin bulb in a socket above a solenoid at the left side behind the arch. That lamp must be there and working for the solenoid to change the speed.

Be sure the mech is well and properly oiled.

I think Rob miss- spoke--I am about 99.9 % sure he wanted to say that there is * NOT* any set-up required, for 33 rpm play -
That lamp is a #12, any other and it won't function CORRECTLY !! ( Lamp number is marked on one side on the glass portion of the "legs")

Sweet, Rob you were spot on with the spring. Ron, that makes more sense than what I'd imagined.

The lamp behind the arch works, I've noticed it with every selection I've played. So as soon as I test with a 7" lp I'm confident it will be working properly.

After cleaning the slug rejector and coin switch contacts, only the 50 cent piece will charge the coin register. I suppose I may be back with questions if the troubleshooting tomorrow fails.

For a machine that I acquired for free (fella said he could never get it to play a record) I feel lucky that this project has been as easy as it has been (mainly because you guys have done all the hard work so far). Now I just need to convince the wife it would be great in our living room.

If that lamp is lighting with every 45, something's wrong. It should only ignite, when the 33 rpm coil is energized--so, either it's the wrong number lamp, or, most likely, the switch that controls the speed shift is miss-adjusted ! Good luck ( with the wife--NO advise from me on this subject !! ) Ron Rich
