Rock-ola 448 Adjustment Question

by rvalkenburg » Mon Jun 29, 2015 2:17 pm

I have searched the manual but not able to find anything about this....
The metal strapping band that holds the 45's in the basket has about 1/4" adjustment in the front of the frame. I am looking for suggestions and opinions as to how you have the band set, all the way open (loose), all the way closed (tight) or some where in the middle.

Also, someone had suggested to me (not on this forum) adding some oil to the band where the records touch, I think this is a horrible idea as any petroleum product on vinyl is a bad idea.

Hi Ron,
I set them (rarely) at about half/half---records must not bind. I don't mess with them if "someone else" has not done so first !
Oil on the band-??-I would think you are correct--horrible !! --I would not object to a very light coating (sprayed on a rag/wiped on metal band) of food grade silicone---

Ron V: the adjustment section of most RO service manuals describe the proper adjustment for the record band. If you don't have one, check the sources listed here. Take a look at this:

Rotation of a less-than-full basket is often really hard on the records, as this band can't hold records in place unless it's all loaded; they tend to end up in pieces on the bottom of the jukebox. Patrick

Thank you for posting this.... this helps a great deal.
I have a copy of the Service Manual and Parts manual for the Rock-ola 448 & 449 and that is not in the manual I have.

Yes, thanks for posting that. I have a dozen or so Rock-Ola manuals (originals - not copies) and I've never seen that adjustment in any of them. Ray

That's from the 494 manual, which is a 490 stamped "494" on the cover. I've had that for a long time and I did not realize it's not in the earlier manuals for my later (but older) jukebox acquisitions. Other than the adjustments, it's not a great manual. By the S2 controller models, Rockola no longer bothered to explain the sequence of operations.
