Seeburg 220 scanning problem

by doc5150 » Sat Apr 30, 2016 9:21 pm

I have a Seeburg 220 and have owned it for over 10 years. It sat unplayed for at least 2 years recently. Now when the power is turned on it starts to scan and will not stop scanning. if I make a selection it will stop and pick up record but when the stylus touches the record the arm lifts and the record is rejected before it is played. The manual detent lever is not pulled up during the rejection so I assume I will need to pull the clutch out and clean/lube it. After the rejection the mech goes back into scan and will scan back and forth until the power is turned off. Are the scanning and clutch problems related or two separate issues? Any help for this newbie would be appreciated!

Have you transported this phono since it last operated ? It sounds as if you have without taking proper precautions of correctly bolting it down for shipment. Usually what happens is, one bends the scan (stop) control contacts, located under the TMU.
Seems you have determined that the reject problem is mechanical--if so, you are correct--the clutch yoke PIN has frozen to the #2 detent lever, and/or to the clutch yoke. FYI, My Seeburg Mechanism Guide covers these problems, and describes my solutions. If you would like to purchase a copy of it, please PM me.

Ron, thanks for the information. I have a copy of your mechanism guide and am using it to help me work with the clutch. The jukebox has not been moved. I will try to find the stop control contacts. Thanks again.

Thanks for buying the guide--I hope you also have the correct service manual, as the guide is a "supplement" to the manual.
If the phono has not been moved--can you stop the motor using the service switch ? Ron Rich

"doc" The scan subtract contacts are under the Torrmat plunger block. It is a pair of blades with a roller that runs up a ramp when the mech is at the extreme left (as viewed from the rear).

If the machines scans continuously there are three main causes:

-Scan assembly is dirty. The scan assembly are just two solenoids with a ratchet and a pair of blades: http://s1192.photobucket.com/user/Rob-N ... rt=2&o=121 If the plungers are gummy or oily they can fail to fall down and the scan ratchet will never subtract.

-Pitted contact blades. If the arc suppression capacitor fails or the contacts simply become pitted and weld together, the mech will never stop.

- Welded contacts in the credit unit for reasons similar to above. The check here is to see if the ADD (at the right) coil is remaining energized.

In the case of pitted-welded contacts, Ron's post "Contact Points" should help.

The clutch issue may simply be old oil and that has become molasses. If you have a heat gun or old "hot comb" you can apply some heat to the yoke hinge on the clutch assembly and see if that frees it up enough to work-in some new lightweight oil. Follow-up with proper 20wt oil after using the machine for an hour or so. Be careful to remove any plastics near the mech when using a heat gun. A machine that has sat idle for months or longer should always be lubed before using it again. I also take them manually through a cycle before applying power. It is like prepping the engine of an old car by putting a bit of oil down each spark-plug hole to make sure the pistons are lubed.

Gentz,
You all have more "faith" then me, if you think you can use heat to free up the clutch pin--I MIGHT try this on a phono that did not have a "plastic detent switch actuator", but I sure will be chicken to try it near that "plastic"--!!
Also, Rob--have you ever seen the motor run contacts "pitted" without the cap being a problem--I honestly can not re-call it ever happening ?? Ron Rich

Ron, there is sufficient space between the clutch yoke and the scan roller and this is how I have gotten them working when it was just a matter of a short time (year or less) and old oil.

i have also used an ancient 340 watt Weller soldering gun with tip against the yoke bearing to boil out the old oil. I didn't mention that because few people will have an iron that large these days.

As for the contacts, I also switch the tube filaments and often a power supply for external relays so I always add a 120V relay so it has never been an issue in a location machine. .The scan operates only that relay. I do agree that arcing can cause the problem.

Thanks to both Rob and Ron for your replies. Ron, the service switch did not stop the scan. I cant test it now as I have the clutch out. Rob, the scan subtract contacts look like new but I have not been able to check the scan assembly or credit unit yet. Thanks again for your help. Kevin

Why can't you check the operation of the scan control circuit with the clutch out ? Should make no difference !

Ron, I got the clutch freed up, oiled and back in the mech. It now will play the record all the way through! The scanning problem persists and I tried the service switch with no effect. The Mech Guide was very helpful.

I found the info and just reviewed it. It looks like I will need to get into the back of the machine but I know very little about electronics...
