question about magnavox micromatic console needle/cartridge

I'm trying to take good care of my grandmother's old console. It was purchased sometime in the '50s and it is a Magnavox Micromatic Record player. Everything is in good condition. However, I am without a manual, serial #, etc. and am in need of a needle and/or cartridge. Speakers are fine, all of the insides of the unit seem to be fine. It was working great, but is now without needle and of course won't play any records. Any advice would be very helpful! You can also e-mail bumdittydj@gmail.com with any advice. Cheers! :?:

Hi guest,
Nice looking Magnavox. The reference number 6541 indicates changer is dated 1965. I have three S600 changers and they are similiar to one in your picture, in fact looks to be same. Two are from 1962/63 tube sets and one from 1965 solid state set. All of mine use an Electro-Voice cartridge 132. Do you have the number of your cartridge?

Ebay is a good source to look for needles and cartridges. Also, you gain from the seller's source data in that you get replacement and substitute information. If you think they are too high, use their data to search the web for other suppliers. But any of the big cartridge/needle sellers on ebay are helpful and in most cases you can't beat them.

Is your set tube type or solid state? I guess you know for sure your problem is the cartridge.

To anyone looking for the cartridge and needle for the magnavox console micromatic from the late fifties/early sixties...I found a newly produced exact duplicate at BC Electronics at 215-547-7600. It is an ES-2003, as 163d-nos, Magnavox RP Cart for $74.85 including the needle and cartridge. This is an exact EV275 substitute. Hope this helps!

Hi I just found this page and I was needing some help with the record player I just got from my grandparents. All I know is that it's a Magnavox Micromatic record player. I found this page where the other guy was having this same problem. Some one told him to look under his tt, so I tried the same but I cant get mine off. When I loosen the screws the tt becomes completely tight to the whole console its self. The picture that he put on there looks just like my turn table but im not sure if it's the same or not. Can anyone help me please? My e-mail address is jbyrum@ymail.com I would be very grateful for any help. Thank you

For all of you above, contact www.west-techservices.com to see if they have a cartridge for the Magnavox Micromatic. I just restored one and they had one for it. The one they got for me was
an EV cart. I think Astatic also has one that will work. You need one with a flip needle in it for 78 or LP. The cart. needs to have 4 prongs on it for stereo hookup.

FOLKS...

Lift up the tone arm and, when looking at the front of the cartridge, so you a square metal clip, pull that with your thumbnail or small screwdriver slightly forward and the whole cartridge will pop downward and right out. The cartridge number should be on top. That's how you match a PARTICULAR cartridge to the correct needle. To put back in, slide the back of the cartridge into the mounting bracket first, then push up on the front part until it snaps back into place.

Model/Run numbers, cabinet finishes, etc., have nothing to do with the cartridge and its appropriate companion. Those older turntables could use many different cartridges provided that they had mounting brackets that would fit and also have the same output voltage.

I have four consoles with the same turntable, and all the cartridges are different. One tube model, I believe, has a flip-under crystal, where the whole cartridge rotates in its own mount.

Those W610 series micromatics were basically the same, the only difference being a smaller or larger platter (interchangeable), a taller or shorter spindle, black/gold or black/silver tonearm with matching overarm thingy, and different molex connectors underneath to connect to the receiver/amp. If it was used as a separate unit in a component system, it would have had a short speed on/off speed selector switch. Just my two cents. --BB

Sorry if I tend to be verbose and over-explain things. Just trying to help out the newbies.

The cartridge does NOT pop out on the ones that have two screws on top. Instead, remove the screws. They look like the one in my avatar.

I was imagining someone breaking the cartridge mount on these trying to pop the cartridge out.

Sorry, Record-changer:

I was referring to the ones that had the single screw through the top of the tonearm that held the mounting bracket in place. You can remove those cartridges without disturbing the mounting bracket. --BB

Transistors instead of tubes.
