NOS Cartridge intermittent operation

by deash » Sat May 12, 2012 11:25 pm

I'm having trouble with the new Cartridge I purchased it is shorting out at random times. This cartridge is a Astatic 1151D and is replacing OE Tetrad S-43-78-6
the Tetrad fit snuggly in the Headshell and had to be gently pried out and while the Astatic looks just same as the Tetrad, it doesn't fit as snuggly you can place it in the headshell and it will stay there but it doesn't take much to jar it loose, so I put a little dab of DAP Weldwood spray adhesive on a Q-tip and dabbed a little on the bottom of the Headshell and top of Cartridge and joined the two together and that seemed o.k. for a while but now I'm having some prob's. I'm thinking the Cartridge needs to be firmly married the the Headshell/Tonearm....really wondering how the experts would handle this??? The Cartridge is resident in the Headshell but not ridgidly resident. I thought about using crazy glue but I knew I didn't want to join them forever. any advice anyone?? again this is a Admiral (ensign) EN607-1 record changer and the console is a Truetone WEG5747A-78.

Thanks for any help, Doug

Doug,
My question is: what does "shouting out" mean --is is loosing all sound, just some sound --are the wires tight-not touching anything, including each other ?
As for being loose--is the cartridge supported with a metal, or plastic, clip? Ron Rich

I'm not sure what you are talking about in reguards to Shouting out? I didn't saying anything like that in the above post?
I have not done a Continuity test yet going to do that now, but look at the photo below there are no clips, bands, screw's or
otherwise to keep it in place? the original is on the far right and was just pushed into the headshell, there were no signs
of adhesive when I pulled it out of the headshell but it was in there tightly. the cartridge I'm installing is the one with
the stylus protector.

A small amount of Polystyrene glue fixed the problem....intermittent channel shorting and distortion are gone, sounds great.
