No electronic gear should be just plugged-in after a long period of dormancy. In the case of these heavily used commercial machines that is even more critical.
The reasons are simple; certain components will have deteriorated and can place both a heavy drain on other components or a dead short. Either will burn up other components including the expensive transformers.
The mechanism is likely bone dry and dirty. Bearings can be ruined by running them dry like that.
Get some written information. Learn about the machine so you can ask specific questions, then asses your own abilities and interest in restoring it.
