I'll have to check the speaker line up on the console...something like a 9" and two 4". Still
lots of sound for a smaller unit. The stereo-mate
is self powered with the following specs: 30 watt power amplifier. Three speakers; 10" woofer, 6" mid-range, 3 1/4" tweeter with crossover network. It was available in mahogany, blonde, ebony, and walnut finishes. I wish it matched the console, but this is the
only one I've seen, and had to wait two years for one to show up on ebay!
You are right with the stereo/mono set up. Without an external speaker/amp, the console is a mono unit on its own. It uses a Sonotone 8T cartridge, but with 3 terminals instead of the usual four. Overall, it is a pretty good set up but has a couple of limitations. The stereo-mate has its own volume, but no treble/bass control. Also, when connected to iPod or internet through the main console, only one channel is distinguished and played through both units. I think it's is a pretty neat example of early stereo reproduction, which was much better resolved in the coming years.
