I got my Wurlitzer 2800 back up and running. It looks like this machine suffered a fair amount of neglect before I got and I would like to start fixing it up. I want to start with an amp rebuild for the 545 thats in there and also a speaker replacement. Does any one have any speaker suggestions for this machine. The manual calls for one 16 and one 8 ohm 12 inch speaker.

I strongly urge you NOT to replace the speakers. They are designed to provide maximum performance in that cabinet, equipped with that amplifier. IF, there is a problem with them, I suggest that they be re-built--re-coned---Ron Rich

Thanks for the reply. Point taken! A previous owner may have already beat me to it though. The speakers do match at all and one is a Jensen. Were they producing speakers for Wurlitzer at some point. I can start checking around for a pair of original speakers if I have to replace one or both to get them back to stock.
Ron Rich, I appreciate your honest answers and the fact that you are willing to share your knowledge and experiences regarding this topic.

In general I'd agree w/Ron's advice (not an unusual occurrence) on this, but here the main priorities are: efficiency and resonance point. It's also worth mentioning that reconed speakers often come back with different performance from original due to whatever generic cone the rebuilder has available.
Those amps had at best about 12 watts RMS/Ch. Typical free air resonance point was 70-75 Hz. Wurlitzer used two different types of speakers for two reasons; To spread out the resonance peaks and as a sort of tone shaping. The 16 ohm spk will draw 1/2 the power of the 8 ohm and in theory be about 3 db lower in level.
Just last night on another forum a person asked about using a modern Jensen C12K2. Looking at the spec's this appears to be a good choice if you want to go with a new driver.

Thanks for the info. I am interested in making this machine sound as good as it did when it was new maybe even better. I can get a pair of original speakers for 45 each. I know I am taking a shot with them but I think I am going to give em a whirl. The last person who looked at my jukebox was pretty sure at least one speaker was not original.

Determining if the speakers are original, should be no problem--just look in the parts book, and not the part number--then look at the speaker-it should have the number "rubber stamped" on it. Ron Rich
