I have just bought one of these interesting items from a flee market. It is in a poor state of repair but works to a degree. The fabric cladding is motheaten, the padding of the carry handle has disapeared leaving only a metal skeleton, the catch that holds the case open is in parts and all joints in the tonearm/pickup are loose. But if I was the same age (almost am) I would probably have the same complaints (sort of do). The biggest worry is that when it is wound up and set in motion the turntable slows to almost nothing when the needle comes into contact with the record. Would it have a worn spring, dirty mechanisms or is the tone arm assembly counter-balanced in some way that I can not see? It appears to be a drag related problem. Sound is pretty good whilst it is going at speed.
I picked up about 100 records with it too. About 20 are in an original album case. The disks are different sizes and quality. Some have the original sleves though they are tatterred. On sale also was a disk about 15inches across, had a swan logo, and numerous separated tracs. Can anyone tell me what this disc could have been? Occassional effects for radio maybe?
