Rock ola 443 not playing vinyl

by ianwilkinson1 » Wed Aug 17, 2011 1:20 am

hello,
i have just purchased my 1st jukebox, having collected it from london and driven it to the isle of wight i was keen to give it a go. i managed to get it in situ and loaded it with the 45's . i spent the next hour or so listening to all my old favourites , when it suddenly stopped playing. when i enter the record number it selects the correct record places it on the turntable the arm comes across , but then immeditaely returns and the disc is then picked up and placed back in the rack without playing . is this a common fault? i havn't found a local engineer and wondered if this is something i could sort easily . Any ideas? or does anyone know an engineer on the isle of wight?
many thanks ,
kind regards
ian

Ian,
I assume that you are not too mechanically inclined, from what you have posted--but---
You MAY be able to correct this problem as follows:
Select any record and allow the record to be placed onto the turn table (TT). Just at the point that the needle sets down on the record, set the service switch to "off". Look at the tone arm, it should be "free" to move to the center of the record--if not turn the service switch on/off for a second--
when the arm is free, move it to the record's center--and look down below it--you will see to "switch blades" --move the arm back to the start of the records and observe the blades--there MUST be a gap between them--if no gap carefully "reform" the one "that moves" to provide a gap--It must contact the other one, at record's end- -- Hope that helps-- Ron Rich

Hello Ian,

I would contact Len Beddow who is a roving jukebox engineer from Staffordshire, he goes all over the country.
Just do a search on www.google.co.uk for his details (Len Beddow jukeboxes) tell him Alan Hood passed on hi s name.

hi,
thanks for the advise , i had a look and fiddled with the various moving parts to check they were moving freely , i was aware that it had stood and was hardly used , at a guess i think it had not been serviced since the early 90's . i noticed that the arm mechanism had quite a lot of grease on it which had gone quite hard and sticky. i have cleaned some of this off and also applied some wd40 to loosen the thicker stuff. After this it played perfectly . Is there a recomended lubricant , or would wd40 and regular use suffice?
regards,
ian

Ian, I've a 443 and I sent you a PM earlier today, ironically one of the things I mentioned is not using WD40.
