Hi folks,
New to the group.
I just came upon a very good condition RCA SES-6 record player.
It appears to be from 1959 or 1960. I believe it was RCA's first with "Stereophonic Dual Amplifier" and "Four Speaker System".

Everything seems in good condition, except: it doesn't spin around!
I don't even know how it works. Is it belt drive? (there's no sign of a belt). Is it direct drive? (I don't hear the motor running). Does it use an "idler" (and what does that mean)?
It has a large many-toothed gear that has a spot (approx. 10% of wheel) where there are no teeth. Does this mean the gear is shot? Or is this OK?

How can I find out more about how to repair it?

While it could be several things it is generally a glazed idler. The whole unit I am sure will require a good cleaning and lubrication. You should take the platter off and see what is going on inside. Some of these Victors do not disengage the idler which will develope a flat spot over time if the speed selector is not put in neutral. The gear you described is made that way, there is nothing wrong with it. You also will want to replace the paper and electrolytic capacitors as these go bad with age and can damage the amp if they short. All this can be found if you search this forum and other "how-to" sites. This Victor is worth restoring. Good luck.

I will try to "unglaze my idler". One more obsolete technology to become an expert at!

You can use denatured alcohol or rubber rejuvinator which can be purchased on line or at a copier repair center.

If the idler wheel is shiny and glazed, as long as the rubber is still pliable, it can be brought back to life.
Fine steel wool rubbed carefully and firmly on the surface will remove the shine..... then a good treatment of "Rubber Re-Nu" helps.
IF... the rubber is hardened to the point of no return, it'll need replacing. No ifs, ands, or buts.
Clean the platter's inside rim, motor shaft, with alcohol or suitable non-residue cleaner.

If the changer uses the turret-style speed change mech, that will have to be addressed as well.
There are several sources online for replacements of the rubber parts.
Also, I'm sure the motor mounting grommets are shot.... they'll need replacement.
If in doubt about tackling such a job, source out a good vintage restoration tech.
