AMI K-200 E COUNTER & METER PROBLEM

by straycat_gr » Thu Jan 28, 2016 12:25 pm

Greetings,
I have two minor issues with my jukebox.

1) Counter mech...

When a selection is made the counter (on the top) that shows the number of the plays, does not count. (it doesn't move).
I was wondering where it gets its signal from (power). Is it from the credit unit or the credit circuit board? How is it suppose to work? If I understand how it works I will find a solution.
When does the counter start counting? when a coin is dropped? when a selection is made? when a record is placed on the turntable? or when the credit unit coil moves?

My other question is:

2) Popularity meter...

I have aligned the popularity meter and everything, but when it turns with the record magazine motor and the jukebox selects a record to play, no pin is pressed to show what song was played!
Isn't it supposed to move a pin on the meter wheel so you know what song selection is more popular? Although I have pushed back all pins on the meter, no pin moves.
Where is that triggered from? Is it maybe a gear that I mght be missing or broken?

Thank you for any answers!

Cheers,
Takis

Hi Takis,
Going from my great, but not too long memory, I think the counter (which is a marker of the total number of selections MADE{but not necessarily played}) is powered by a set of contacts on the sprag relay--I think these contacts also power the circular, popularity counter, at the same time. If I am correct, it is all 25vac power.
The schematic should show this circuit.

Takis, here are some functionals from my I-200:
Follow from: http://s1192.photobucket.com/user/Rob-N ... ort=2&o=25

For some reason Photobucket placed some in this folder too:
http://s1192.photobucket.com/user/Rob-N ... %20I%20200

Here is a shot of the overall schematic: http://s1192.photobucket.com/user/Rob-N ... g.jpg.html This is from inside rear cover. On all shots you can blow them up by hovering the mouse on the pic and punching the fourth gray button that appears.

The "I" mech is essentially the same as the K with the exception that K had an AC gear motor for the gripper and a relay box that was powered by the DC that had previously powered the original DC motor directly.

I -may- be ably to find additional K-specific info around here....somewhere.

Yes Ron, fixed the Selection counter first. It was a wiring problem and you were right... it goes from the sprag relay. I also took it apart and cleaned it as it was sort of jammed and the spring inside it didn't work well. The electro-magnet was fine though. Works like a charm now :-)
Thanks to Rob too for the schematics.
I'm going to check the popularity playmeter tomorrow, and I guess its solenoid is also powered from the sprag relay. Have to check out why the popularity pins are not moving.

this makes me feel like an idiot but I will say it...
The problem with my popularity meter was that the solenoid is missing! It looks like I never checked to see if it was actually ever there!
I am left wondering how it could look like. My parts manual doesn't show it very well (it is a copy after all).
Does anyone have a photo of it so I can see how it looks like? I am trying to understand how that whole system worked. I mean except the solenoid was there something else there missing? I need to understand how the pins moved and what sort of mechanism was pushing them.
Any help much apreciated!

Don't be too hard on yourself--we all have been there--sometimes the saying used is: "You can't see the forest---"
Sorry, I have never paid too much (probably "any") attention to the pop meter on those models, as most of them I have seen have been in home use, where that meter is seldom used ?? Ron Rich

OK Takis, I don't have a photo -but did scan from the original parts list for that series mech:

But wait....there's more! (*)

Thanks once again you guys!
Rob for the precious schematics and Ron for the reply.
Well here in Greece I found out that they were very rarely used (even in pro use) but I just wanted to put that final touch of perfection ;-) just to have everything original and complete. I will wait for a system to show up on e-bay I guess :-)

Takis,
You are welcome- search the suppliers listed above, and I think you will be able to find the parts you want ! -Maybe even "new"--

Takis, I can't be absolutely sure about this but, It appears that AMI used the same playmeter assembly from the G through the two Continentals.
I've owned a J-K & Continentals 1 and 2 (all 200's) and the pop maters and scan assemblies all seemed the same.

If true, it will widen your chances at getting parts of your model.

Yes it is true, all the popularity meter assemblies are the same through all the models you said.
And guess what... as soon as I mentioned a search in e-bay, one assembly showed up there! and it gets even better... it was in Greece!!! now what were the odds for that? I should have wished for the first lottery prize instead :-) The price was ok so I picked it up already, installed it today and working great, so now I am one happy AMI K200 owner with a complete machine!

Just one more thing... The popularity meter is not powered from the sprag relay. I figured out that the solenoid is pushed out with the record changer motor (just before a record is placed on the turntable) and is released only after the record arm starts going back to its home position.

I don't know why it is still listed on ebay (maybe Dimitris forgot to delete the listing)... here it is (or was) :-)

thanks again to both.
take care,
Takis

Takis,
Glad you got "lucky" !! I have a question--
You say the "solenoid is pushed out with the record changer motor---" HOW ??
Is power applied to that solenoid all the time, any record is being played? --If so, I would imagine that something is wrong and the coil is subject to "burn up" ?? Ron Rich

Ron, the solenoid is there to index and restrain the pin from popping all the way out with the first push. Later they used a foam strip and notched nylon strip for that.

Takis, glad you found it and made the machine 100%
