1954 AMI F model finish question

by pipester13 » Tue Sep 01, 2015 6:57 am

Hey, folks. new member, first question.
I've got a 1954 AMI model F120 in my garage that a friend of mine picked up at an auction. Well, in my dayl job as an coin op technician, I've repaired many jukeboxes, but never restored one. I have everything working except the amp, and a recap and tube kit should fix that. So my question is about the cabinet finish. Does anyone know where I can find a photo of an original finish for one of these old boxes? Google, Yahoo, Bing, and the like keep showing me G's and black and white photos, but I'd like close up color photos to see the detail. He'd like it as original looking as possible. By the way, it's supposed to be Paddy's Green as far as I can tell, but someone covered it with a gray fleckstone-looking stuff, probably in the 1980's. The newest title card in the box was for the Dukes Of Hazzard Theme Song, if that tells you anything.
I'll try to load up some photos later, when my camera charges up. Thanks for any help and since I work in coin-op, if you've got a question for me, ask away.

Hi Dale,
Somewhere there are color photo's of AMi's--don't recall which model(s), or where I saw them--might have been here--search "Ami colors" here.
My 'guess" on the current paint job is that it was "Zolotone"--became very popular for jukes in the late 50's-60's as it "covered everything",without the need to sand first !

Well, yea, I guess if used on an AMi, it was Zolatone--HOWEVER, if used on a Seeburg, Select-O-Matic, it had to be Zol-O-Tone !

Yep. you folks got it right. I looked up Zolatone, and that's what it is. Now, i just need to find the original color. Should I just go with whats inside? It's a light green that looks sprayed on, then a darker green that looks rolled on, then a clear coat, then white speckles and then black speckles. I'd post a picture of both if I could figure out how. It really does look factory.

Ok, so lets try this.

So here's the back with the tag, covered in Zolatone. Zola-lame if you ask me.
Here's a pick of the inside.

The inside looks original. My boss has restored many 1960-70's pinballs and they all have that splatter on them, so i guess it had to start somewhere.

This site shows Ami Fs in two colours.

Doghouse, I had looked at that site before but hadn't really paid too close of attention. Sure enough, on the back next to the serial number tag, I can almost see the texture and splatters. Thanks for all your help, folks, and I'll keep you updated. I need to finish this so I can start on my Panasonic RE-787 26 transistor stereo from the 1970's.
