SEEBURG 3WA-HD MOTOR CIRCUIT PROBLEM

i hope someone can help with this one! This wallbox was thoroughly cleaned and adjusted. The motor continuously runs even with the credit unit unplugged. I have worked on literally hundreds of 3WA's and have never had this problem before and cannot seem to find a solution. Any suggestions would be most helpful.

Either the clutch is not "flying out", when it should ( lack of proper oil), or the carry-over circuit,(contact points "stuck" together ?) is shorted somewhere-- Ron Rich

Ron covered most of it, but this is a common problem. Slip a piece of paper between all point sets on the upper cam stack (behind the wafer). This isolates all but the carry-over field on the wafer. The motor is wired in the typical Seeburg manner, AC in and the return (ground) doing the switching. As a result, it is possible that a short to-ground inside the motor casing will cause it to launch.

A chafed or broken wire here will cause the motor to launch as will a broken or missing insulator sleeve in the top contact stack.

I have 93 of the 200's out. Even with modifications they are still needlessly complex. The "Old Gepetto's" must have "loved" these compared to 3W1.

Thank You Rob-NYC. I had done all that and after i read your post i decided to go back and take a fresh look at everything. I finally found the problem and it was a short on the wafer selector plate by one of the three holding screws. Somehow the head of the screw was making contact with the brass. i replaced the two top screws with smaller head screws and the problem has gone away! i have about a hundred and fifty 3WA's so if you need any dont hesitate to give me a call as i am in nyc as well, downtown brooklyn.

It's a "Rob-ism"! It's his term for someone who has "worked on" something on which he is not qualified to do. I usually note that this type of a person is, IMHO, not qualified to fix a sandwich ! Another term used widely here in the past, was a "Rube Goldburg". He actually was a person, a very good artist, with a very strange mind, who would draw "items", that were very involved and preposterous. I believe you have an equivalent "down under", who's name escapes me at the moment---Ron Rich

It's funny you mention Rube Goldberg. My father often called me that when he saw some of my electric/electronic concoctions back in the '60s. Both parents were well educated, but they could just about change a light bulb.

Ron, my father gave me a book of Rube's illustrations back in the mid-sixties. His stuff was somewhat "Gonzo" and psychedelic. Very '60's. This was as close as my parents came to understanding what I was doing.
