LU-1 (Seeburg Library Unit) problem

by eddie » Fri Feb 13, 2015 1:12 am

I picked up a LU-1 and the mechanism was froze up with old grease. Took it apart and cleaned and lubed and put it back together. With all the pins down the mechanism scans back and forth. I push a pin up, it will pull the record and play it. At end of record, it will place the record back and then replay it. Over and over. It never advances to the next record. (next pin) This is my first library unit and I don't know what makes the carriage advance to the next pin. The LU is strange. But cool.

Hi Eddie,
Got the service manual-- ?? If I recall correctly, this is a 78 rpm unit --if so, it is almost the same as a model A. These have a "safety link", that can "hang-up", and my guess is that's what is happening here-- Ron Rich

Hi Eddie,
Any 45 rpm mechanism manual will work ( and my Seeburg Mechanism Guide),---safety plunger "pin", or linkage, is questionable, when this happens.
"Electronics"in this will be similar to any other Pin-bank style mechanism, except, in the case of a LU, it has the hand activated style "Pin-bank".

The safety latch is good. When the carriage down the pin bank it shorts when the wiper hits a pin. The mechanism loads a record. When if hits the end of record switch, it unloads the record. The pin is still shorted of course so, it just does it again. The has to be a switch that takes that pin off ground long enough for the carriage to move and get off that pin. That's what I need to know. Is there a relay in the preamp?

Eddie,
My great, but not too long memory, can no recall, but that circuit consists only of the "pin", you move to select, and the sensor. Phono should touch selected pin and MOVE forward, just enough to clear selected pin--should be pretty self-explanatory, or you will need to purchase a service manual---
One other thought--Is the mechanism properly oiled--is it "floating" on the 3 or 4 springs, under the base ? Ron Rich

Apparently NOT self explanatory. lol. I have a Manual. I just don't have one for the Library Unit. I guess I will pay 30 bucks for a manual on Ebay that somebody copied and has no rights to. Please explain what you mean about going a little past the pin. When the pin grounds, the solenoid fires immediately and trips the mechanism and it goes into load mode. Yes yes yes. Unit is clean and oiled. Clutch etc is set up per the manual.

Ron you were right! I slid the entire record rack over and it worked. Not sure what difference it made though. It would seem the carriage would overrun the pin in one position as well as another. But it works. Thanks!
