My DS100 restoration thread.

Its hard to see but I painted a test stick and sprayed it with the Gold Fleck this is what I was planning on doing with the crown rather than have it pin-stripped to complement the inside that I painted gold. Again it's tough to judge this by the example but what do you think?

I can't see the gold flakes from here--but either way it still looks great !

Well I am done painting, I plan on putting some polyurethane over the outside of the cabinet when everything is completely dry but otherwise I am happy with the way it turned out, the crowns have some gold flake in them witch is hard to see in the pictures but I didn't want it to stick out either.

What waz the original color--blue, I think ?? Looks fine, except that it appears the tie down nuts may be tightened down--Those 4, 9/16 nuts should be run ALL the way up--till they jam, against the top of the studs-- Ron Rich

The original color of the inside of the cabinet is the dark-grey / black color they used, same as the outside of the cabinet the rest is the same as original with the gold and white. I will have to check those bolt’s I almost positive I have those down all the way.

Being somewhat color blind, I seldom pay much attention to colors--yes--check them thar nutz---they iz NEVER supposed to be ALL the way down, as it compresses, and ruins the springs !! ( besides the mech will slide much easier if they are up)

Starting to put it together, I still have the TES, back panels and door to redo but everything else is done and getting put back on.

TES is done and in, have the mech in and hooked up and selecting I started on the amp tonight so it might be playing by the weekend.

Brad, not withstanding a few very minor dings on the grill, that machine looks like it came off the assembly line.

Really remarkable and nice to see those often overlooked later Seeburgs get a first-class restoration.

What are your plans for the sound system?

Thanks, my brother in law was down from Chicago this weekend and said he wants to buy it but I guess that will solve my two DS problem I have right now. For the sound system I was just going to leave it stock, I am real happy with the way my DS160 sounds and the speakers are in great shape on this one so I assume after the amp rebuild (SHFA5) it will sound great. But out of curiosity what are some of the things done to the sound system?

IMHO, I would do nothing to that sound system--except, if not already done, jump the Autospeed audio relay, so the DS speakers are always on. Ron Rich

Brad, the mods, if any, depended on the machine and situation.

In a DS with top speakers I simply bypassed the existing preamp with a Radio-Shack model in which I'd slightly increased the H-F response about 6db. Overall this provided better bass and treble response.

Where the top speakers were missing, or in one AY model I added tweeters behind the grill as done with 222 & Q models along with the new preamp.

I personally considered the original T-stylus pickup to be really mediocre in stereo but Ok when strapped mono so on those machines w/out the upper directional speakers they went out mono.

Since all but one of these were done in the mid-late eighties when Pickering was still making the good diamond styli there wasn't any great need to change the pickup. We did do that on a 222 that went into Caroline's Comedy Club in 1988.

At this point with good but expensive replacement styli again available I tend to agree with Ron that if you are satisfied with the original system after rebuilding you might as well keep it. It would take too much effort to try a new preamp though....

No Ear speakers on this one, I bought this for parts initially and took what I needed including the ear speakers and put them on my 160, but I just didn’t have the heart to part it out.

I am going to leave it stock that sounds just like to much work

On a side note I do have the amp rebuild complete, replaced all the caps and it sounds great other than an annoying hum it’s a constant hum and does not vary in pitch. I have tried a few things but have not dug in too it much yet.

1. I have made sure the mechanism Is not the interference
2. I have also pulled the mute and audio input and the hum stays
3. I have tried this amp in my 160 and the sound moves with the AMP

I’m thinking it might be the AVC circuit but not sure yet, but am open to suggestions.
